Looking for some leads. . .
« on: January 25, 2009, 08:51:16 PM »

I am looking for a solution to two things for my '09 CUSE.   :-\

1)  After a ride I need to get my bike from the middle of my garage to a spot adjacent to the back wall without pushing/pulling the 960 pounds of steel back and forth.  Just don't have the room.  And do the reverse when I want to ride.   That requires a 90 turn and a side push.  All but one jack that I have found are made for lifting, not lifting and moving.  The Pitbull jack seems to do both but I just want a jack, not buy the whole damn company.  I found a movable ramp but that was also expensive and way too bulky/large.  I can buy a jack and redesign/fabricate a new wheel config as a last resort.  Any ideas out there?

2)  I want to use ear buds with my comm system rather than helmet speakers.    Does someone make a harness that uses the seven pin round connector on the gas tank that terminates into a stereo female mini plug?

Road Hog would like to know.  Thanks much.

The J&S jacks (http://www.jsjacks.com/lift.html) are the best solution for lifting and moving as far as I know but I could not afford that at this time so I went with the Sears (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00950190000P). Some folks have had problems with the Sears jack but is has worked fine for me so far.

Road Hog, Check out J&P Cycle catalog 2008 pg 1025, Cycle Dolly. It is nothing more than a channel that you walk your bike on then put down the kick stand on a plate that is attached to the channel. The channel has casters on so that you can roll or spin you bike into its parking place with little effort as long as it is on concrete. Might be what you are looking for. Have also see similar item in the American Iron mag.

On the headphones - I took a pair of Shure in ear buds, cut the HD "ear speakers", spliced in the Shure buds.  They are the style that have the soft rubber so go in the ear and stay there.  Work perfect, I really only use when I'm on a longer ride/trip, but they work perfect!

Here's an adapter if you just want to plug in your earphones.  I bought one last year and it works fine.

There is this product:

http://www.cycleslider.com/

but you could make your own for a hell of a lot less if you have a welder.

Holy crap.  You're not kidding.  Almost five hundred bucks for four casters and some channel.  Gulp.....

you said it.  I have been looking at this for years thinking about how dirt simple it would be to make.  It takes about maybe $50 worth of AL channel.  "Harbor Fright" has a similar porduct, but the name says it all.

If you are brave, or stupid.......

By the time you got four or five or six good casters and the channel it could be enough north of $50 that Harbor Freight's $100 was close enough to not waste the labor time mocking it up.  Trouble there is Harbor Freight's castors would likely need to be replaced with something that wasn't crap for the task.  So it's still likely a wash.

$500 for that other one is nuts though :huepfenlol2: .

For that price, the blonde better come with it!   :)

Before I bought my J&S jack, I was using a $68 jack I got from Walmart in Enterprise, AL.  The bottle jack finally gave out on it, which prompted the move to the J&S.  The Walmart jack served me well for 3 years, and probably would have lasted longer had I taken better care of it.  Not sure if they're still selling them, but might be worth a look.   :2vrolijk_21:

Mattm, et.al.

I have decided to at least price out my own design for a slider.  The CAD drawing is complete, materials ID'd and I hopefully should have some pricing this week.  I will post the info for those interested.

I to have used a motorcycle lift for awhile until I broke the welds on the handle, pushing and pulling the darn thing around.  I would just buy another one ($90) and call it done but the wheels are too small and the effort to move it around is so large that there must be a better way.  I am no longer 25 so it is just going to get harder unless the wheels get bigger.  Of course, I could sell the SEUC and get a smaller, much lighter bike; then the problem goes away entirely.
