The oil pump had no sign of wear or scaring but it was replaced as part of the kit.
The cams were fine and the lifters were fine so no issues there.
So for a nice "ole" bike  that has a lot of goodies, it now has a new lease on life.
I usually ride it 3 to 5K miles a year just to keep it exercised and ready when I need a back up.

I know how some "wayward" scooters end up in your garage.

Same cams for the last 20K miles Jeff.
Using Otis's and Don's logic, they are almost stock.

Glad you caught that inner tensioner Chip.  Wasn't all that far from finally and suddenly breaking apart.  Good old bikes need love just to show we appreciate them.

Chip, you going to cut your old cam plate in half and mount a dial indicator in it for a home made measuring tool?

No, but I'll send it to you if you want to do that!
I'm sure I have your address somewhere.

I don't knock the new bikes generally.  There are obviously significant improvements in the new frame design.  The addition of a good ABS system actually attracts me more than does the frame improvements.  But, yeah, there's something good about a bike you've had for awhile.

It takes awhile, sometimes a long time, to really get one dialed in to you.  Seats and windshields and bars and bar position to start with obviously.  But then all the little stuff that matches up to the way you use the machine and how you're comfortable on it.  Especially if one is doing most of that himself it breeds a comfort with the machine that's good.  And hard to turn loose of.

Have had bikes that never got that far or had that comfort with.  Turning them loose was no big deal.  They're all just parts in the end.  So turning loose of any of them isn't that big a deal.  But the comfort and familiarity we gain with the ones we've really dialed in is no small thing.  And the bikes that have gotten there do deserve some care to keep them that way.  It's hard to knock 'em.

Already have one made that way.  But a buddy here wanted to do the same thing after he saw mine.  If no one on the site claims it first to do the same thing I'll take you up on it.  Lets give it a few days to see if a site member chimes in?

Oh I understand "stock"!  Been thinking about addressing the weakness of the old tensioner system in Ruby (02 SERK) Figure I can get this year out of her before any issue. Then I add some "stock" equipment to her.

A few ways to go there Jeff.  On the 02 the crank is likely good so gear drive would be an option.  Also the cam plate using the newer style tensioners as Chip showed here.  One other at least worth considering is the complete newer cam plate with the same newer style hydraulic tensioners.

Benefits there are primarily in installation.  The cams slide in the cam plate.  No press needed.  So a lot less tools needed for the common home shop that doesn't have a press and doesn't want to buy the press alignment tool for cam installation.  Downside is you have to use a hybrid cam that's "older" on the engine end and "newer" on the outboard end for the cam plate.  T-Man has some good options for that though.  So it's at least a consideration.

Absoluely.  The guy here can always borrow mine.  He's less than a half hour away.  So not a big deal.
