Heartland Blasted by Ice
« on: January 28, 2009, 09:44:57 AM »

We've been blasted by an ice storm here in West Ky. We've been w/o power since the night before last. Trees look like the middle of a war zone. Power lines laying on the ground everywhere. The local power company stopped in my driveway yesterday and I asked what it was looking like. They say for every line they repair, 5 more break. We could be w/o power for a week or so. Clinton is on a different power system, but it's out of power too.

I was standing out in the garage yesterday, and about every 5 minutes I could hear another huge limb break off and hit the ground. I'm fortunate and managed to pull a welder/generator to the house yesterday. It will generate 240V 40 amps of electrical power. I found an old heavy 10 gauge duty extension cord and clipped it into the panel box. Disconnected from the power grid, and I can heat the house, get lights and water (we're on a well), even got this PC on, but just can't do but one thing at a time.

The last storm that left us w/o power I swore I was going to buy a rel generator that runs off propane, and wire in the disconnect so it would automatically run. I'd guess it would cost $5,000-$7,000 but, compared to loosing power in the middle of winter, it sure would be nice.

After getting the generator working yesterday, I had no gas. My truck and mower are both diesel. I tried to syphon out of other vehicles, w/o much luck. You could not buy fuel in clinton. I've got a 1,000 gallon tank a work, but, no way to get it w/o taking the generator. I finally went to another town and got 20 gallons. That will last 3-4 days.

If you drop the wad on a real generator set up you will spare your entire region any more future storms...
It worked for me, big azzed generator, no hurricanes that were bad enough to whack the power out since...Big difference tween havin to swill the beer before it gets warm here without power and freezing yer willie off without power there..Pics are nice...

I agree miker. If I buy the generator, I'll never need it. Right now my satellite is froze over and I can't even get TV. Talk about roughing it. ! ARGH...

I'll get out in a bit and check on other family members. It can really get rough on the elderly that still live out in the boonies. No water, no heat and no phones.

Right now the beer is warming up in the fridge. I can just set it out in the driveway to cool back off though.

I generally don't drink before the school bus runs anyhow.
