Hoping for a short ending
« on: January 29, 2009, 01:28:55 AM »

Ok put a Baker OD6 gearset in stock Harley case, though it was newer style then my 01', the only difference I believe is the where the breather tube connects.  The issue is that with stock neutral switch "the white one 99 to 01" the N light was off in neutral and on in gear.  The white switch is normally open so my knee jerk action was to go get a black switch "normally closed" should be fixed.  Right?  NOT :confused5:  Now N light is on all the time till you hit 4 th gear then it goes off, and comes back on in 5th and 6th.
We had one warm day last week here in Iowa so I road it home, now its snow ice and cold so I havent felt like hooking up trailer and hauling it back to the shop.  I really dont think I need to tear the whole thing apart , but who knows.  Hoping someone has run into this before.  Really stumped here.  Thanks

I'm not sure about the black switch, but if you say the white switch does what its supposed to, only opposite (light OFF in neutral and on in all other gears), then the shifter drum must have the appropriate detent for your application.

Is there any difference between the black and the white switch in length?

Not knowing a lot about your specific application, like you have indicated, it would still make sense that just changing the polarity of the switch should correct the problem.  But with a reverse polarity switch, you have a totally different set of circumstances.

I would check with Baker to see if they have had this issue and what they recommend for a particular application.

I'm just thinking out loud (well you know what I mean) about the way the original setup operates, a N/O switch would have to be pushed to ground out the neutral light and turn it on.  So did the original shift drum have a outward cam point that would trigger the switch button in neutral?  I would think that having a switch always pushed and riding on the drum and dropping into a hole to activate the neutral light would put a lot of wear on the switch.  So having a cam to activate the neutral light would make more sense to me.

Sorry for rambling on this, but if you have what you need, only opposite, changing to a reverse polarity  switch should fix your issue.  I can't explain why your N/C switch had a different set of issues.

I don't have any manuals here at work so I can't look at the parts to confirm my thoughts above.  If someone can correct me on my thoughts of how this is supposed to work, please enlighten me.

Good luck with your problem Godeater.

Not that this is important, but my son lives in Des Moines and trains horses there.  He has said that this winter has been very cold and more snow than normal.

Good luck with your weather.

Baker 404P for the 01 and 404P2 for the later models should have as an only difference the P2 kit coming with the vented oil spout while the 404P does not.  When the transmission in the red bike shelled I got in to the various models and differences.  That was the only difference I could find between them then.

You should have used the neutral switch that came with the 404P2 kit to match their shift drum.  If you didn't get a switch with the kit call Baker and get one.  Only other question I can think of that you'd ask them is I remember some models in the different fitment matrices having a footnote about needing to change tranny top cover also.  I don't think that was mentioned in the 404P or 404P2 descriptions.  But when you ask Baker about the neurtal switch it can't hurt to ask about that.

In short, however, the gear set you used should be ok.  Only difference is the vent (though after installation is a bit late to still be wondering about that).  Whatever you've got going on should be no more involved than matching the neutral switch to the drum or, perhaps, matching neutral switch and cover to the drum.  Shouldn't have a fear of having to pull the gear set again.

Wow I am a dork, well its fixed.  The N/C black switch was the right one.  Works perfect if you turn it that extra 1/4 turn to seat it all the way down.  Rookie mistake.  Thanks for all your help.

Never worry about simple mistakes that don't cost any money to fix.  Those aren't screw ups.  They're just learning experiences :2vrolijk_21: .

With my 2007 110", a little amount of difference in switches caused the light to come on when hot due to case expansion.  It flickered in first, on solid in 2nd.  Very sensitive for a switch of that type.  They could have gone in a bit deeper or had some sort of adjustment.
