Never Happened Before
« on: January 31, 2009, 09:17:14 PM »

Pulled into the old HD dealership today, I had not been there in six months and the place looked slow. Pulled up to the service drive and said can I get a oil change "yes sir pull it in and do you need anything else" I was shocked.
In the past you needed to make a appointment two weeks in advance for a oil change. Times have changed in a good way for the paying customer, It was out on thirty minutes.

BTW, the oil change was $86.79.

The demeanor of the shop seems wonderfully refreshing.  Had to be a nice feeling to be greeted that way.  Within view of a hundred bucks is still a lot of money for an oil change though.  Even with synthetic oil.

Guess I really do prefer doing the oil changes at home though.  It's the best regular opportunity to take 15 minutes while the last drops of oil go drip drip drip to give the bike a walk around and eyeball everything while checking critical fasteners for tightness.  A shop tech might do that for you.  He might even be diligent.  But it's easier to feel good about knowing you've done it yourself.

Having said that.....  Nice experience at the shop :2vrolijk_21: .  Congrats on the great experience.  May it continue for their customers and earn them business in the process.

I never understood how an HD dealership can get $90 for an oil change.  I just got the oil changed (11 qts + filter) in my Dodge 2500, at the dealership no less, and it cost me $59.  So why does 4 qts and a filter cost $90?   :nixweiss:

It seems nuts when doing it yourself at home costs $50.  But that's about what four quarts of Mobil 1 and a K&N filter come to.  The longer service interval and extra bit of thermal protection pull me in to the more expensive oil though.  If I could see it back there S U C K E R is probably tattoed on my ass.

Unfortunately, even Mobil 1 V-Twin which is what I use also, is twice as much as regular Mobil 1 V-Twin.  But even if I had used synthetic in the truck, it still would have been less than $90 (I think it was $85).

One of the local Wal-Marts started carrying Mobil 1 bike oil last year.  A dollar and change more per quart than that automotive marketed Mobil 1.  That's the cheapest I've ever seen it though.

They charged you $15/qt for Syn3?  :o  You should ask your dealer next time if you can bring your own oil in.  I pay $8.95/qt for Mobil 1 V-Twin at the local WalMart Super Center and take that down to the dealer.

That's about the same out here at the local WalMart.  I think Regular Mobil 1 is $4.95 and V-Twin is $8.95.

It's hard to argue with a twenty dollar labor charge.  A 1/2 hour's labor as a shop minimum isn't out of line and would be more than that.  But fifteen bucks per quart for Syn 3....   Gulp........

Just for grins just looked at the Harley website.  The mothership lists MSRP for the Syn3 at $11.29 per quart.

Yeah, that's actually a good labor charge.  Our dealerships charge $80/hour around here.

Ooops, misread that to begin with.  My bad.  It's Howie's fault.  Everything is Howie's fault.
