Tour Pak Antenna Holes, Cheap Solution
« on: September 24, 2005, 05:03:59 PM »

As the 05's came out with their stock chopped paks and stock antennas there was chatter among those (like me) that didn't like the look of the antenna but also didn't like the holes left in the tour pak when the antenna was removed.

Another view pulled back a bit.  To show how the emblem occupies the broader field of the tour pak.

TwoLane, that trademark emblem has been out in that heavy format for a good 8 to 9 years at least now.  It's the replica of the old trademark decal that was the same size that was available in the 70's.  You are almost old enough to remember it.  That's one thing that I do appreciate that the MOCO does well.....continue the 'tradition'.  I think it looks good on there.    [smiley=cool2.gif] spyder

Yeah, looks good!  But maybe another one on the other side, so as to not be quite as obvious as to what you're trying to do? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Or maybe a 'I rode up Pikes Peak' sticker on the other side.   [smiley=1syellow1.gif] Har!   spyder

Part 1
Ok, here is what I did. Sorry the photos did not come out real well.

Had these custom painted to match (exact color) adhesive patches made and stuck them over the holes.

Actually, the patches were already attached to my tourpack spoiler and were used by the factory to cover up the screw holes while painting.

Part 2

Didn't really like that, so I bought 2 - 1" long by 1/4" carriage bolts. I filed off the ridges on the surface, chucked the bolts in a drill and lightly touched them on a grinder. Then while still in the drill I used various grades of wet-dri sandpaper and water and polished the heads. I then used the HD touch up kit to paint the heads.

part 3

The picture does not do the plugs justice, they look real good.

To install, I had cut the bolts to the proper length, I think it was 1/2" inch and used a 1/4" stainless flat washer and 1/4" acorn nut on the inside. On the top hole, which is bigger, I used a short piece of rubber hose, about 3/8" long to fill the space around the bolt. The fuel tank crossover line that I replaced with the braided line was just the right size.

That was probably very much like the effect I had with the plastic plugs I used and painted up for my red bike.

Since my tour pack sits on a shelf most of the time it doesn't bother me.

But that defect in the paint that I had the rep look at weeks ago (no response as of today 09-24-05) ......................

Actually I think setting on the shelf had the reverse effect on me.  Most of the time the pak hangs on a wall rack.  That rack has the pak at eye level every time I walk in the house from the garage.  If I hadn't seen it every darned day I'd probably not have messed with it.

Enjoy the movie  [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Duane,

Smart man, covering it while its stored. I like your fix the best. Just looks normal. I I'll give it a try.
