Tachometer Issue...
« on: September 24, 2005, 08:30:51 PM »

Noticed yesterday that my directionals were cancelling way too early, and my tach is now "hopping".

Anyone ever have this happen? Do I need a new tach, or is it like the speedo with the magnetic pickup that can be cleaned?

Thoughts?

Took the dash off...big mistake...trying to get all that chit back under and screw it down sucked.

Friggin fuel line is outside the tank in front instead of underneath.

We'll see if cleaning the contact helped later.

Disconnected the module. Blew the contacts out. Still hopping.

not sure where the signal comes from on an FXR but you may want to check that back at the source before you swap the tach

The tach signal comes from the ignition module. Its a single wire to the tach. Check it out first to be sure its not grounded or loose along the way. Good luck

I believe that's the pink wire.

I'll check it out.

I have an FXR3 manual...but it just shows how to install the tach. I'll have to look at the schematics tonight.

...and honestly, it doesn't really show how to install anything....

I know...an HD manual that isn't helpful...it seems so....expected.

There's really nothing to it. The tach gets the signal from the module. If you know someone with an evo fx model maybe you can swap modules as a test to see if it cures the problem. Its only a couple of screws and a plug.

if you can find the other end ( ignition side ) check for continuity there could be a break somewhere in the wire, ya never know whats been rubbing against it. if it looks good you may want to check it again with the motor running if you have a partial break you may not see it without the vibration
