CASTRO VALLEY — A 28-year-old motorcyclist was killed on Interstate 238 this morning after being run over by a big rig, authorities said.
The Alameda County Coroner's Office has not released the victim's identity pending notification of next of kin.
The 8:30 a.m. crash shut down northbound I-238 between I-580 and East 14th Street for about an hour, according to the California Highway Patrol. Traffic was backed up on westbound I-580 to Dublin.
"Evidently, he was splitting traffic," California Highway Patrol Sgt. Keith Crane said of the motorcyclist. "The right foot peg of his motorcycle clipped an auto-transport trailer. He was ejected to the left and underneath the rear dual wheels of a big rig pulling a fully loaded trailer, and the big rig ran him over and inflicted fatal injuries."
The motorcycle was a Kawasaki ZX-6R. Crane said that trucks on the freeway were moving at between 5 and 10 mph when the motorcyclist split lanes, and that the victim was going faster than traffic but most likely well below the speed limit.
"I-238 is a bad area for them to split with all the construction," Crane said. That section of freeway has reduced lane width, no shoulders, concrete walls on both sides and is heavily trafficked by trucks coming from I-5 to I-880, he explained.
Officers responding to the call found the motorcycle driver gravely injured and the bike under the tires of the truck, CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.

The CHP called the coroner within 11 minutes of arriving on the scene, Van Eckhardt said. A Sig alert was issued at 9:02 a.m.
All lanes reopened on northbound I-238 in Hayward about two hours after the fatal crash.
No one else was injured.
This is a friend of my bros, myself, and our club as well . I've been to way too many funerals this past 12 months. This man just lost his baby recently.
