Interesting Night
« on: February 03, 2009, 03:32:37 AM »

My wife and I are watching the news in bed tonight when I hear a crotch rocket running hard nearby.  I hear downshift, skid, downshift, skid and then the crash right outside of the house.  I throw on sweats, grab a flashlight and head out front.  Crashed bike, and an unconsious guy in his early 20's or so in a full face.  I check his ABC's (airway, breathing, circulation) and since he is in a good position for breathing, etc., leave him alone.  Within 30 seconds 4 cop cars show up.  It seems that the guy had bolted from them when they tried to pull him over.  While it's been weird to this point, it takes the paramedics over 5 minutes to show up even though the firehouse is about 500 feet from the accident scene!  Don't know how the guy is doing as he was still unconsious when they took him away, but I am too pumped to sleep right now.  Hope he's okay.

Visitors in the night Ernie.  Rarely a good thing.  At least this time the only misfortune was for the guy running from the cops and the only thing it's costing you is a few hours sleep.

This is where I earn my a$$hole patch... But I could care less if this guy is OK.  Yes I've been stupid.  Yes it probably could've been me any number of times in past.  But I still don't care about these kids going blasting around and riding like complete maniacs.  I can't tell you how many people lump all motorcycle riders together.  So some nit wit goes a hundred down the street on one wheel sounding like a pissed off bumble bee and annoys the neighbor, he takes it out on me trying to get "no bike" laws implemented in the community or restrictive pipe laws, etc, etc, etc, or even worse... Cuts me off or tailgates me because he's mad at someone else.  Doesn't make it right, but it is true.

If you're gonna ride like that you will get hurt.  Maybe it's nature's way of cleansing the gene pool.  Sort of the Cliff theory in reverse.  In this case nature's taking out the fastest.  In my ignorant mean nasty opinion the kid got what was coming to him.  Thank god he didn't hurt any one else.

Ernie,

I 100% see your point.  But I still feel the same way. With my son getting very close to that age I think of that all the time.  You can't correct stupid and we're all indistructible in our minds when we're teenagers and still know everything.  I know my son who is going to be biker will do stupid things and all I can do is pray he uses some common sense and survives.  I've pointed out the dangers, explained to him what can happen, take him with me on any ride he wants to go on so he can see that you can have fun without showboating, etc.  And it may still be him in couple of years laying in the street.  I know that.

But suppose this guy blasted down the street and hit some kid.  Yours or mine?  I'm sick of the crotch rocket show offs ridng like public streets are stunt areas.  I've personally seen it go bad and hit a innocent lady in a parking lot.  She was simply trying to walk into a store when the kid doing a donut out of a parking space lost it and his bike ran off without him right into a woman.  They're a mennace and I dont feel bad for them.

If it is my son some day, I'll cry at his side.  I don't think life would be worth living for me without him.  But I will still think he got what he deserved if he did something like that.

Wow, what a wake up call! Are we gunna see you on "cops" or "amazing chases" now? I am glad you were available to help the kid out. I had my days of running from the law, glad they're are long gone.

Speed limit in my area is 25 MPH.  The guy left 168 feet of skid marks, then another 30 feet of the bike sliding before hitting the curb.

BTW, just to clarify:  In no way did I mean to imply that I thought you should not have helped, or even to say that I wouldn't have helped if the situation happened to me.  I may be an a$$hole, but I'm still human (usually).  I just can't bring my self to feel sorry for them or care about them the way I do when a rider who is trying to enjoy the road while riding in a reasonable manner is hurt through there own fault or another's.

WOW JC chill out. Of course we are all fed up with the behavior and remember that for every choice we make there is a price to pay-some are steeper tha  others. IMO it's another example of a guy's angel having his back! Hopefully his gord is okay. Thanks for sharing guys

Update

Came home from work yesterday and there was a makeshift memorial where he landed (balloons and flowers).  I guess that he ended up dying from the crash.
