Garmin music
« on: February 06, 2009, 10:11:56 PM »

I just installed a 550 on my bike and I loaded about 900 songs on the internal SD card.  Is there any way to manipulate the music so that it is reflected accurately in the music section on the Garmin?  Specifically, how do I ensure all the rock songs show up in the "rock" category, oldies in the "oldies" category, etc?  Ensure all the songs are actually shown in the "all" music catgegory?  Right now the songs are scattered thorughout all the music sections on the Garmin, with no real rhyme or reason for where they end up.  Any ideas?
Did I miss something in the directions??
I appreciate any guidance anyone might offer.
Thanks, Steve.

You will need to open up the properties of each of your songs (MP3's) and check the Genre. You get to the properties by right clicking on the MP3 file and scrolling down to "Properties". You can set the Genre to whatever you want by clicking on it (see pic attached). Just remember that it is case/space sensitive and to get them all together you have to name each song/MP3 the same. Example "Oldies" and "oldies" will give you two different groups. There may be programs that will allow you to change the Genre of multiple files at the same time, but I'm not aware of them I do mine individually.

Now you will be able to play music by Genre by clicking on the Music Note> Browse> Genre and all the groups will appear, once you choose a group a list of all songs that have been labeled that Genre will appear. You can scroll the list and pick the song you want or hit "Play All" at the bottom.

As a follow-up on the Garmin Zumo MP3 player, can you put files in individual folders, i.e., put your favorite CD in a folder then play it in numerical order, or is it all random like a SanDisk mp3 player I own. Even though you supposedly can play an "album" on my SanDisk, I usually only get one or two songs that appear on that album even though the rest of the songs are still in the mp3 player. That's why I like my cell phone that uses Microsoft mobile operating software. It includes Windows media player, and you can simply load all your favorite albums (or CDs now days) in separate folders on the micro SD card with all the songs in the original order. Then in the Windows media player on the phone, you just choose that folder and start with the first song and it plays the entire album in order if you let it. Is the Garmin Zumo unit this slick? I'm hoping the Zumo 660 is, or I'll have to plug my phone into the line-in jack on my Ultra and listen to music through it where I have more control. Based upon what Fired00d pointed out, I guess it appears you can go into the properties of each song, name the album, and assign a track number as a way of playing an album completely and in order, but that's a lot of work if you have hundreds of songs or 40-50 albums on a SD card. When I rip a CD into a folder on my hard drive, the album and track aren't usually identified in the file properties correctly.

The real problem with the 550 is the internal memory.  I've got an SD card with about 1,000 songs.  Your gonna have to wait for some time for the song list to be loaded into memory.  Other than the wait though, I've found it to work very well.  Maybe the next version will be able to handle the SD cards this one claims to supportl.

The Zumo will not read files by folders only alphabetically. If you have a lot of songs on the SD card putting the files in separate folders will decrease the start up time when turning the unit on as it reads the card.

If you create folders on the SD card with 50 - 75 songs in each folder the start up time (reading the card) will decrease.

Thanks, Fired00d, that's good info to know. Wish it wasn't so but oh well....Can you at least choose to play songs by album in the zumo as well as genre, so at least it's an option to remame the album exactly right (and case sensitive like you said) and track order?
