09's - Does your 5th gear whine?
« on: February 09, 2009, 05:54:55 PM »

I was out riding today and my friend asked me if 5th gear whined, since his is an 08 and he has that problem.  I usually have the stereo blasting to the point that I couldn't hear it if it was making noise.  I turned the stereo down and listened as we went down the road.  No whining at all.  I know what I was listening for, since I traded an 07 in for the 09.  5th gear was very noisy on the 07, but I am not getting any of that in the slightest on my 09.  Did they fix it, or do I just have freak bike?

On my last one, it had nothing to do with mileage.  The noise was there from day one.  I just don't recall hearing anything about fixing that issue, yet I don't have the issue on mine.

No whine here!
But I use shockproof!

I didn't think there was anything out there to fix it before, other than a kit...I think it was from Baker, to change the 5th gear and it was quite expensive.

I fixed mine on the '09 before I ever knew it whined.  Redline Shockproof Heavy at 000.8 before it left the shop.  This bike and all of them get Redline MTL in the Primary and RSH in the tranny immediately if not sooner. :2vrolijk_21:

Never had any 5th gear whine on my '07 and I have 46k on it.  Use Redline Heavy Shockproof since first fluid change at 1k but didn't notice it even with the Syn 3 which it came with.  I've not heard of any changes to the 6-speed cruise drive tranny since it was introduced.

My 07 didnt really whine for long put in the Amsoil 75/140 before the break in was done.  On the 09 it whined badly from the start, tried a variation on a recommendation to try the 75/95 amsoil.  Calmed the noise down, but the 75/140 made it much quieter to the point you dont notice it.

Based on the comments above seems like the heavier are the ticket to fixing it if you have it.

My '07 has a bit of whine in 5th gear. 1st and 5th gears are straight cut gears on the Harley CruiseDrive 6 tranny. 2nd-4th and 6th are all helical cut gears.

The only "fix" available, as mentioned earlier, is the Baker F6F which replaces the gears for 5th with helical cut gears. The Baker wesite doesn't have pricing (that I can find), but I spoke to folks at the Baker booth in Sturgis about this product. It seems like the price was a few hundred dollars... maybe $595? Don't hold me to that, though.

As already said, the Red Line Heavy Shockproof, is what we have been using in the gearbox, for close to 2 decades.

You hit it on the head...here's their site link for the F6F, but I don't see the price listed.  I thought it was more.  http://www.bakerdrivetrain.com/f6f/index.htm

Just another thing that is "normal" if you have it, but unexplainable if you don't.  STMC!

My '09 has the "whine", but a lot less now with Redline in the box. Have Redline also in one of my other bikes with the Baker trans. BTW: the Baker shifts like butter, you "think" the next gear, and you're in!
Yes, good experience with the Baker people.
