Patriot Guards
« on: February 09, 2009, 08:52:40 PM »

I'm sure some of you on here probably belong to the Patriot Guards and can answer the following questions.  My wife and I were out riding in the North Georgia mountains this weekend (upper 60s to low 70s both days), and we passed a group going in the other direction.  We were curious about the following.  We know that the Guards originally started in order to isolate/protect families and loved ones of our fallen soldiers from that fringe religous group that was showing up at the funerals and memorial services claiming that the soldiers died because of our "social" problems.  We haven't seen anything in the news lately about that religous group.  Are they still doing that or have they given up on that nonsense?  If they've given up, what role is the Guards still playing at the funerals and memorial services?  I'm not trying to start up anything "nasty" by posing these questions, but we are simply curious and I figured someone on here would know.

Our chapter here is South Dakota thankfully has few problems with protesters or zealots. One good reason to put up with the cold... The local chapter does stay busy however going to funerals for military and prior service/retired. We also put out a good showing for deployment and welcome home functions. Lots of flags and bikes! And yes, all done with the full cooperation of the units in question, or the surviving family members.

When not doing memorial and funeral details the PGR can frequently be found escorting soldiers home from being deployed and escorting "sendoffs".

By far the most enjoyable is riding to the airport and escorting our heroes back to their families :2vrolijk_21:

Duane - I probably will.  As a vet myself during the 71 to 74 timeframe I have a firsthand understanding of what it means to be under appreciated by people.  Thus, I think this is a great idea.  Do I just contact the state captain at the website Naitram posted above?

Top right corner of the http://www.patriotguard.org/ page

"Register"

You might want to contact a state captain then to make sure you get put on the states email list for missions.

You can also search the confirmed and pending mission columns on the right side for events in your area.

Once you find and particiapte on a mission there will be plenty of folks to keep you steering in the right direction.
You may find some old friends when riding for a mission. I have met up with long lost buddies several times now, some I never knew rode.

Wrongway - thanks! It's all different now thankfully, and it's really good to how soldiers and vets are respected.

Duane - thanks for the other info.  As soon as I get to a computer, I'll register. Am using my cell phone right now.

I think the world let them know finally how little they were appreciated because they have not been in the news (at least around here) for a long time.

Hey Bob,

As a Navy veteran, I was asked by a fellow HOG member to "tag along" to one of the PGR rides, a 20 year old killed in Iraq.  It was the toughest, but most rewarding things that I had done in a long time.  We had 90 bikes showed up (with over 100 "escorts") and after the church service was over, the family came out and shook each and every one of our hands. I hadn't cried in years...... until that day.

It wasn't until then that I realized just how young the parents of these fallen soldiers are.  But, once you see how much you are appreciated by the family and friends, you're hooked.

Just try it once.  It's worth your time and effort.

Buffy - thanks for the reply.  It's been on the back of my mind for a while and between you and the others here I'm convinced.  We've had our share of the fallen here on the Athens area and I've seen the Guard at one of them.  It was something else to see.

Being a veteran myself of 10 years, 1988-1998, Navy Corpsman with the Marine Corps VMFA 115 Beaufort SC. and being affiliated with "The United States Veterans M/C", South Carolina chapter for 20+ years, this is something I am not familiar with and would be honored to receive any info about "The Patriot guard" in Ohio?? I am searching immediately after this post but any personal experiences would be great!!

BikinBob and Buffy, Thanks for your service Brothers and thanks to ALL veterans at this awesome site, THANK YOU.
