GM PARTS SHORTAGE?
« on: February 10, 2009, 04:56:22 AM »

I was T-boned 4 weeks ago, causing about $30,000.00 damage to my GM vehicle. Tried to get the vehicle written off but the insurance said no. Had to be at least 75 % damage in dollar value in relation to what the vehicle is worth. Just been told by the body shop foreman(owned by the GM dealer where I purchased the vehicle) It is going to be another 4 to 6 weeks because they can't get parts. That makes at least ten weeks of the vehicle sitting idle.None available due to layoffs, plant closings etc. He is more frustrated by the whole thing because he probably has 30 more vehicles in his yard in the same state of repair. The dealer is bending over backwards, giving me a vehicle exactly the same to drive as the one inthe accident. Still very frustrating.

Do you have a rental rider with your insurance. We are going through a similar situation and found out our insurance provides a renal car at not cost. The insurance company did not tell me this but someone here at worked mentioned his insurance, same as mine, provided the rental car. I looked into it and sure enough they do. We just picked up a new Chev Malibu last Friday, approved for 2 weeks. Check with your insurance,, you may have the ride and not realize it.  :2vrolijk_21:

GM to cut 10,000 salaried jobs

Last Update: 9:28 am

DETROIT (AP) – General Motors Corp. said Tuesday it will cut 10,000 salaried jobs, citing the need to restructure itself with a government deadline looming and amid some of the worst sales in the auto industry's history.

The Detroit-based automaker said it will reduce its total number of salaried workers to 63,000 from 73,000 this year. About 3,400 of GM's 29,500 salaried U.S. jobs are expected to be eliminated.

The company's statement said that the separations would be done through GM's severance plan, so there would be no buyout or early retirement packages as GM had offered in the past.

In its plan to Congress submitted late last year, GM said work force reductions would be necessary in order for it to be viable for the long term. Most of the cuts are expected to take place by May 1.

GM said the cuts will vary by global regions depending on staffing levels and market conditions.

In addition, GM said it will cut the pay of most of its salaried U.S. workers beginning May 1 and continuing at least through the end of the year at which time the pay cuts will be evaluated.

The pay of U.S. executive employees will be cut by 10 percent, while other salaried workers will see cuts of 3 percent to 7 percent, GM said.

GM faces a Feb. 17 deadline to present to the government a plan showing it can become viable. The plan is required by the terms of $9.4 billion in low-interest government loans to the wounded automaker, which is seeking another $4 billion from the Treasury Department.

The automaker is negotiating with bondholders and the United Auto Workers union for concessions and it is planning to close several factories. To prove its viability, it must show an ability to repay the loans and prove "positive net present value."

Glad to hear you are OK, 30,000 should be close to 75% of value.

Rental only provided the first $1,500.00, which it hit yesterday. They are deeming the accident due to road conditions therefore no one is at fault. That sucks, because my insrance is paying for the repairs and now the vehicle is "branded" on the ownership, whereby everyone will know it has been whacked. GM is giving me a temporary vehicle of the same. I would like a new vehicle. It won't happen , I don't think but I'll be fighting it. THanks for the info.

Back in the Iacocca days of Chrysler, I bought a new Dodge truck. I let the brakes go 'till the rotors were shot. I had to park it for 8 months waiting for parts to come in. I wouldnt be surprised if we see a lot of parts shortages with the problems the automakers are having.

There are all kinds of complications for parts now, GM has to pay suppliers which they are holding up, suppliers are down for weeks with no orders to fill from GM, it is truly a mess.

I wish I would have leased it or financed it through GMAC. I would just stop the automatic payment withdrawals. Sometimes it doesn't pay to pay up front.
