The numbers just don't add up
« on: February 10, 2009, 09:07:56 PM »

I just received my April '09 issue of American Rider.  On page 48 there's an article entitled "More Bark for Your Bagger".
Basically it's about installing Vance & Hines Monster Ovals, Fuelpak, and an open air cleaner kit.
Once everything is set up they record a whopping 4.77 increase in hp and a whole 1.75 lb. ft. of tq!!!  Wow!!
They say "with most of the gains coming between 3,800 and 5,500 rpm.
Now here's where it gets interesting.  A few pages later Joe "The Wizard" Minton has his V-Tech article.
Joe recommends the same V&H Fuelpak, slip on mufflers and A/C kit.  He says with this stuff the TC96 should gain about 15 lb. ft. tq. and 10 hp!  He goes on to say "That would place torque in the high 90s and peak horsepower up around 80 or a bit more.  Plus he indicates this gain is in the midrange where we ride most of the time.
Anybody else think there's something goofy here?   :confused5:

There is an article in the latest Cycle World where they put Monster Ovals on and left everything else alone.  They gained about five percent.

HA HA , no different than a dyno sheet where the page is set up so it looks better by crushing a section.  Or maybe they did the tuning in super cold temps and used uncorrected figures. Who knows with numbers. Without real info to use to compare to good luck.  :nixweiss:

Basic problem is American Rider Magazine and in particular Joe Minton.  What a lightweight.

No different than some dyno tuners / cut rate shops / builders quoting fabricated numbers or posting in actual rather the normal of SAE corrected... It's good for business when they postunrealistic numbers...

This isn't the first time someone has tried this ploy nor will it be the last...

BAD for the end users...  :-\

I've usually done at least a stage 1 hop up to my bikes, but so far I haven't done anything to my '08 CVO.  Besides not being 100% sure of what mufflers or entire exhaust system I want- (mostly because all most all of them are too loud on a dresser for long trips) I'm not sure about what fuel management system I want.
I know the SERT is probably the most tuneable.   But my '06 SE Ultra didn't run quite right (I used a SERT w/ Rush slip ons and Dogherty Power Pac), obviously because the dealership didn't tune it properly.  It was mostly good, but way too rich on the very bottom.  I almost dumped the bike a couple of times doing tight turns getting out of a gas station.  The engine would cough and I'd lose power for an instant which ain't fun when you're leaned over all loaded up.
I'm leaning toward a SERT, D&D 2-1 exhaust, and "roll your own" A/C, but I don't trust my dealer to tune the SERT properly.  I'm scared to take it to a different shop because of warranty issues.  -Then you read an article like the one in American rider where it sounds like you'd be lucky to pick up 1 or 2 hp and nearly no additional tq- at least where I ride.  Sometimes I think I should just do the Night Rider O2 exhaust sensor doodad and call it good.

Unfortunatly this is the real world, and too much of this, and also the facts in post # 4(GMR)go on in the high performance business.(Dynos and Flowbenches)
It's a shame,cause it ruins it for everybody. >:(
