That makes more sense Spyder if they're saying it might happen generally.  Some difference in how the fairing is mounted (or something) that might gain or lose an 1/8" .  What seemed especially odd was the initial warning that somehow it was just bikes with painted inner fairings?  Like red or yellow paint was going to be 1/8" thicker than black paint  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Part of the explanation the dealer said MOCO related was that, in fact, the painted surface did add several mils thickness over the stock inner.

Yeah, I agree..."several mils" ain't much thickness.  Oh well, I guess we've beat this subject up enough.  Maybe in the future we'll get some explanation...probably not.  Thanks for everyone's input.  After reviewing all the posts, I'm reminded how seriously we take this stuff.  The fact that everyone was so passionate about a matter which in the grand scheme isn't life or death is pretty amazing.  Nice being associated with you good folks...PJ

PJ57,  Well it's good to know that Patriot is willing to replace the part under warranty (however it happened).  I have never taken my bike to them, but looking for another shop to do my wrenching.  FT. Washington has not been measuring up lately.

Scrrem,  Not sure if the same players are there, but when we lived in Northern VA, we had our bikes serviced at Patriot with the greatest success.  Kelly was the service manager and she did a great job. Norm was our normal wrencher and he had worked on the road king since it had been born and delivered to us - we followed him from Dumfries to Alexandria.  He is awesome - worked on the ole time bikes, back before everything was plug and play.  Jeff works in the parts department, and you could not ask for a better parts man.  We give you a thumbs up at Patriot, if that counts for anything.

Mrs. WeCVO,
Thanks for the Patriot feedback.  I will give them a try my next major service.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Hi Mrs! I'm not completely sold on Patriot - BTW, Kelly is no longer there...getting an appointment there can sometimes be weeks, then your bike generally isn't finished the same day on major service.  My favorite dealer in the area has got to be Waugh in Orange followed by Winchester.  Unfortunately, they're both a little too far for me to get my bike serviced.  Maybe we'll start a new thread, but DC,MD, NoVA riders - who's the most consistent HD dealer service wise in the area? I'm sad to hear that Kelly is no longer at Patriot. It has been almost two years since we have been there, having moved South of Richmond. I know that East Coast in Dumfires was a nightmare for service work, and where we live now the Colonial HD service sucks so very very bad... don't get me going.  Steve who serviced my husband's bike here has now gone to Orange and we saw him at the last Orange event and he appologised to me for the horrendous work performed on my bike. Nothing to do with him, but he had been witness and he felt real bad. Any one going to Waugh could request him and we were very happy with him.  We have now gone to Richmond North side for service - I was not happy with my last service and warranty replacement, but the service manager drastically discounted some parts to try to make it up to me.  Mr is trying some warranty work with them now, so we will see how that turns out.  We have used Lynchburg too..... OK.  PJ, you are right it is not looking good for the VA HD service departments.

Ok, I'm going to go out on the limb here and recommend a dealership. If anybody hasn't already tried Shenandoah H-D in Staunton Va I would highly recommend them. Talk to Matt Moore, or Jim Sprouse and tell them that Gary w/the Pumpkin recommended them, and my reputation is on the line. I've had very good luck with them for several years and any problems or concerns I had were addressed quickly. We all know that mistakes can be made; it's all about how you handle them when they do happen.

If you do decide to get your bike serviced there make sure while you waiting you go into showroom and ask for Robbie Ladd (General Manager) or Bob Ladd (Owner) and tell them that I recommended them and "my" reputation is on the line.

Normally if you make an appointment your bike can be back to you that same day. I do recommend you making an appointment especially during warm months, as they do get busy. I normally watch my mileage and look what trips/riding I have coming up and can come pretty close to having the exact mileage on bike that service interval suggests. Hopes this helps and for those that do try them let me know about your experience.

Fired00d.  I guess like PJ and Scrrem, I am thinking Staunton a little far from home, but Oh! What a beautiful ride. I guess if we rode up there on two bikes we could drop one and still run around the area for a few hours and pick the bike up later if it was ready same day.  Am far more used to dropping one night and picking up some other day later in week.   But Gary, if you are putting your name out like that, I will most assuredly keep the Staunton HD in mind for future planning.  I actually have found a non- HD wrencher that I like so much, I only want to go to HD for warranty issues.  My husband has his two years of warranty coming up in Nov.... we both bought the seven years additional, I am now questioning the value. If I don't want to go to a HD shop and don't trust them, it has very little value.  But.... Forbid that something real bad happens to the bikes, I guess it is small peice of mind.  A 130 mile ride is not undoable for us.  PJ and I just ran through the list of close shops and he even said that he has had success in Orange and at Winchester, we had success at Patriot years ago and then the reccomendations are going down hill fast.  What is the break down here?  VA has a lot of HD dealers, what is wrong with their service departments?  I like all of the motorclothes staff and the parts staff in all of the shops. We visit all of them a lot.  What is inherently wrong with the service staff in so many?
