Caution: Inner Fairing Paint Damage
« on: September 28, 2005, 05:26:22 PM »

Folks - I recently bought and installed a HD Chrome Steering Neck Cover p/n 66345-05 ($79.95) to dress up the area in front of the tank where all the cables are routed.  Had my '05 SEEG in for service and while the service tech was checking my brake and clutch master cylinder levels he naturally pulled the bars to the extreme left and right.  When the bars are at their extreme left and right positions, the painted inner fairing makes contact with the steering neck.  In my case it chipped the paint badly.  GET THIS!  In one of those rare, rare, rare moments of customer satisfaction, the dealer called HD to advise of the problem.  HD admited they are aware of the situation and that their instructions will soon read for installation on models with non-painted inner fairings.  HD is covering the part ($400+) plus the labor to repair.  All of this was resolved within a couple of hours and the part is on order (okay, so that could take 'til Christmas!).  That's a first for me with the MOCO.  Guess I should post this on the Ultra site as well since they've got the painted inner as well - PJ  p.s. I'll post a pic of the part and the resulting damage soon.

pj, Sorry to hear of your mishap but thanks for passing that along!  I was just looking at that piece in the catalog the other night.

The labor bill to install that puppy has got to be huge!  There is a lot of stuff that will have to first come out of the way and then go back in place to remove and install the inner fairing.

PJ,
Thanks for the info as this was on my wish list. But not anymore, don't need that problem.

PJ, it's an 04 and not an 05 part number.  And that potential rub is scary.

I've had one of those on my red bike for like six months.  I didn't walk I ran out to the garage with visions of huge ugly gouges out of the paint and hunks of fiberglass strewn everyplace.

But.....

Mine clears completely.  Full deflection either way and the closest the inner fairing ever gets to the neck cover still leaves over an 1/8" of clearance.  Nothing has ever touched anything anywhere up there.  Wonder what the difference is?

I'm glad for those of you who don't have any damage...I'm not sure what the difference could be.  Well, for those who are comtemplating buying this piece, after you install it CAREFULLY check for clearance since it appears to be a selective problem.  The problem must have come up before with someone else because the MOCO took responsibility right away which is REALLY unusual. Service manager at my shop said he didn't have to explain much and the HD rep started telling him how the instructions in the future will have the warning about painted inner fairings.  I still can't believe I didn't have to go on some letter writing campaign...  p.s. Painted inner fairing is $422 + 3.5 hrs labor, according to service mgr.

PJ, it's really unfortunate your bike got marked up.  Given their history your support from the MoCo is both surprising and outstanding.  Just really glad yours is getting taken care of without having to go through hoops and over hurdles.

I think you'd written that you installed yours.  I've thought about the install on mine a couple of times since reading your first post.  And I can't think of where the difference might come from.  Can you think of anything from own install that would account for a difference in the mounting height of the part?

PJ57, Sorry to hear about your damage.  I had that part on my wish list, but I am re-thinking that.  I am shocked the MoCo is admitting a mistake on their part.  What dealer did you take it too?

This just bugged me more and more last night.  Doesn't make sense that a new guidance would printed saying not to use the chrome cover on bikes only with painted inner fairings.

The inner fairing that is painted some color other than black isn't going to rub any differently than an inner fairing that is painted black.  They're all painted after all  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  So the color of the inner fairing isn't going to make any difference to whether or not you get a rub.

Please understand that I'm not doubting that you heard what the dealer told you.  Can't help but wonder, however, if the dealer was playing charades when they spun the story.  Could it be that they simply knew they'd screwed up somehow, didn't have the cajones to take the blame, so laid the blame off on the part and the motor company?

Well, the dealer "Screwing-the-Pooch" would explain why the part is not a problem on other bikes.

That's the part that concerns me though Scrrem.  For there to be a problem on some bikes and not others then there would have to a difference between the groups.  Relative to the problem in question (the chrome cover rubbing the inner fairing) color is not a difference.

'Tis most interesting both as to the circumstances as well as the moco's unusual response. Guess we'll just have to see if the "warning" shows up in the online or paper catalogue. [smiley=confused.gif]

There's currently no updated fitment or special service notes in the online instructions at the HD website.  And that could happen, basically, immediately once someone decided there was a problem to be corrected.

Given that I'm generally a cynical bastard I'm still thinking the shop just might have fouled up, knew they had to fix something, but didn't want to take the blame and figured they'd save face by laying the blame on the MoCo.  There's just something fishy in Norway or Holland or Denmark or wherever the hell that fishy saying comes from.

No, there's another member of this site that had the identical thing happen after having the chrome neck pieces installed and the Dealership ordered and installed a new inner fairing as a result of the damage caused when the forks went all the way over and the chrome covers nicked the lower part of the inner fairing.  Lots of expense that they covered with no questions asked.  The comment was that they were aware of this having happened to another couple of bikes also.   [smiley=blank.gif]    spyder
