I use the K&N Performance Gold oil filter.  Part number is KN-171C.  Beside being a much better element and less restrictive it's on and off with a 17mm nut that is part of the filter.  No more busted knuckles, gymnastics and spills.

K&N filters are a good product as are OEM.  Its really more important that they get changed frequently.  A smaller particle filtration unit is often more restrictive and only allows the oil to bypass anyway.  If the oil isn't passing through the element what good is it?  Most filters with a decent particle size filtration with a mid to higher bypass valve would be a good choice IMHO.

These are the ones that we use that Jerry hooked us up with to begin with.   You know it's the chrome one.   :)

I have converted from the disposable K&N oil filters to a cleanable Pure Power.  Much less tendency to bypass, has higher flow rates, you can see particles in your oil when you clean the filter and it includes several rare earth magnets.  Good stuff.   Also has an aluminum housing that has fins for a little more oil cooling.

K&N KN-171C.  Just don't over tighten it (read:  don't use the 17mm nut to tighten it.)  Spin on until contact with filter flange then 1/2 to 3/4 turn by hand only.  Any tighter and you risk bustin' the 17mm nut off during next oil change.
