Overheated???
« on: September 29, 2005, 02:15:46 PM »

After the California trip, I heard abit of noise on the right hand side of the engine...a small tapping noise.  Took the bike to the dealer and they heard noise in the cam area.  Tore into the engine and found scored cams, scorched pistons and heads...generally FUBAR!

This SE was babied for the first 500 mi and has never been abused.  I used HD octane booster out west where I could not find anything better than 91 octane. (91 is specified for 103, but I have always used 93).  Still have stock exhaust and aircleaner.

Has anyone else experienced something like this?  Anyone have any ideas as to the cause?

Dealer is taliking to the Motor Company now to find out what happens next...it is under warranty so ???? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

The tech said the engine appeared to be oiling properly and no blockage in the oil ports.  The bike was in for 7500 mile maintenance just a few days before I left for CA and I put 5000 on it and brought it back in for 10,000 maintenance

I complained about excessive oil consumption during the first 5,000 miles of running my '04 SEEG but was told the factory wouldn't consider it under warranty.  After returning from Sturgis I could hear a noise from the top end and the Service Manager, Colby Craddock, at Fullerton H-D went to bat for me with the freakin' factory.  The fix had to be done in phases, though.  The first phase, after agreeing there was a potential problem, was to take the top end apart and measure everything.  In my case the factory sent a set of rings so that if that was all that was wrong the dealer could re-assemble and have me on the road again, quickly.  Once apart, the cylinders and pistons were measured and it was determined to have excessive tolerance and a new set had to be ordered.  I had a little down time but ended up with new pistons and cylinders...under warranty.  Problem solved.  This dealership has been fantastic with regard to all of my anal retentive issues.

Panhead, how much was excessive?  I'm burning too much oil in my 03 SERK with 13kmi.  I was told I'd need a ring job but as the 3rd owner I'm SOL as far as warranties go.
