Butterfly/ Flap valve Valve in SEUC headers
« on: February 15, 2009, 12:58:58 PM »

I have just picked my 09 SEUC up and am going to install fulsacs and remove the cat but nowhere on the forum does anyone mention the butterfly valve so i guess this is just on U.K. bikes?
On the non fly by wire SEUC s the butterfly valve was operated by cable I think from the throttle and opened depending on throttle demand and when i had V&H and fuel pack fitted on the 07 SEUC the dealer first disconnected the valve and the bike ran so bad that they then said it had to be reconnected(it still ran crap).
On the 09 the butterfly valve is operated from the ECM (so the dealer says) .The valve is situated downstream of the cat in the right hand header just before the muffler.
When I do the above mods I am also going to use TTS mastertune so my question is do I have to disconnect the butterfly valve manually or can the TTS do that itself or does the butterfly have to be left in operation .
I may be talking a load of crap but I cant see this butterfly valve in Jim Kerrs Cat removalpics???

Concerning the story about the flap (or butterfly), make a search with flap and you'll read all the topics about the International models with the flaps in the exhausts and in the Air cleaner box.

It's not possible to disconnect the cable without enable the sensor in the ECU. It's possible with the SERT.
In other case, you've seen the problem when your dealer had disconnected the cable's valve.

I know not the TTS but I think that it's similar to the SERT.
You need to download the MAP and to enable the sensors for flaps if you change your Air cleaner and exhausts.
So you'll be able to put a SE Air cleaner or others and to disconnect the cable for the exhaust's flap.

You've not seen the flap in Jim Kerr cats because they are not in the States.

I hope this help you.

Thanks Jacques, The only thing I can find on Google is the article below which explains the flap valve operation but I cant find anything else. If you have any links I would be grateful.
I have pm d Steve Cole to see what he knows.

"But the most interesting new feature, or pair of features, are butterfly and flap valves in the exhaust and intake systems - used not as performance aids but quite blatantly to quieten the bike at the speeds and rev levels where noise emission tests are carried out. It's an unequivocal bending of the rules, but perfectly forgivable because, one: the bikes sound great, two: they're not remotely offensive the rest of the time, and three: Harley has extended its social conscience by toning down the sound at urban speeds regardless of the regulations.

The valves themselves are simple, solenoid-operated devices, but the parameters they perform to are complex, depending on throttle opening, engine rpm, road speed and gear ratio, with noise emission requirements dialled in too. Sometimes the exhaust valve closes to quieten things, sometimes the intake valve and sometimes both. Give the bike a handful of twist grip in a low gear and it decides it's at an urban speed so the valves muffle the decibels. Do the same in a higher gear and it blats and thraps.

All the Big Twins come with the six-speed transmission, fitted last year to the Dyna range, and a new design of belt final drive, which uses carbon-fibre instead of aramid. The clutch mechanism is redesigned to reduce lever effort by around 7 per cent, and all the '07 models are fitted with a security system that only allows the bike to be started if the key fob is within a radius of five feet."

hi trot, kess-tech in germany do a switch kit that can be plugged-in onto ur bike, this gives u the option to override the instructions given to the butterfly flap by the ecm to keep it permenantly open or to open close as designed.
wiring plug in kit including manual switch costs 99€, and ur bike remains legal for periodic mot testing.

i^m sorry but it^s only listed in the german language of the kess-tech web site, if u attend any major euro rally kess-tech usually will have a exhibit.

All HDI bikes have this mechanism. On my '09 it was disabled through settings by the dealer. I had a little device with a switch to enable/disable on my '07 SERK, however even on that bike a newer revision of the ECM software allows to disable it, so I have taken the switch out. Hope this helps.

Ride safely,
