Suggestions & Q. 08 SERK.
« on: February 16, 2009, 12:26:39 AM »

Well... I was waiting to get in to the dealership for my 906 and forklock issue when my dealership went under :(. Looks like we are now firmly transfered over to the new dealership, and again, on their waiting list for the 906. Few weeks ago, we were on a short cruise, (beautiful day) and arrived back home to a nice lower end knock! We now have just over 7K on the bike since last July at purchase. I took the bike to the dealership, where they acknowledged the knock. They now have authorization to tear down. The knock sounds to come from the lower end and seems to be equal sound on either side of the bike... Dealership is not suggesting in what the knock is..until they open it up. Any idea what it could be or any known issues?

Q. Since we will be having the engine tore down....any suggestions on up grades? Harley is suggesting, port & polish, cam, and or performance pistons. Thanks for any suggestions!! Muddy

Who do you plan on having your headwork done by ?

What type of results are you looking for out of the bike?

Whoever does the headwork should be helping you decide the combo.   You are limited obviously on Throttlebody since you have DBW, but the rest is up in the air.   If you need help with names of reputable builders / suppliers let us know that too.

How you ride should be the basis for how you build the motor.   Low End stump pulling, 2 up cruising, light to light, top end WFO, etc.   The porter should be able to help guide you to obtain what your after.

Unbalanced: thanks for the reply... to answer your question, in regards to the results I was looking for... just thought since the motor was open, I'd move in the direction of letting the engine breath a bit easier (port) and at the same time enjoy a bit more torque.  I'd say, we ride 99% of the time, two up, and Joanne does not mind a bit of throttle, TG!!  Are you in my area? You have several good choices in your area.

HD-Dude Metal Dragon is a good one and a long time member and moderator here.  Jim's number is 510-885-9471
Dan Baisley up in Oregon   http://www.baisley.com/
Dave Mackie Engineering   http://www.davemackie.com/

To reiterate I would let them help you with a package and getting your heads done whichever shop you choose.

Just remember the key here is the way you ride and what you are expecting.

have the crank trued and welded - no matter what else you do - send the crank to dark horse or your truer of choice.

then consider a timken left bearing - its easy to get done these days

then consider roller rockers

those three things will get you big durability increases.

if i ever have mine torn apart - i wont increase compression, or bore it, or hop up the heads, but i will weld & true & timken and rollers.
