I got a new toy!!!
« on: February 16, 2009, 09:55:46 AM »

A Garmin 550. I'm still learning how to work it. It does over 1,001 things of which I only know four,......LOL!!!!

I have some questions for the more knowledgeable folks here.
It only plays MP3s and not other formats. How do I use my Windows Media Player to convert other formats to MP3s?
I know what a POI is. How do I find other POIs, and load them into the 550?
What are the sites for POIs that deal with camera lights and known radar traps?

Thanks!

If you have the latest version of WM Player you can rip songs from CD's to MP3's by clicking on "Rip"> "Format" and selecting MP3. I believe there are other programs that will do this also (Media Monkey I believe) but I don't use any of them.

For POI's I've used http://www.poi-factory.com/ but only for H-D dealers. You could probably google and get a list of sites that provide them though.

I thouht I was going to open this thread and find a new CVO parked in your barn.

The GPS is one of those things.......once you have it, you can't live without it.  You'll be a pro with that one in no time, Mark. :2vrolijk_21:

I'm just dreading that XM/Sirius may go 'kaput' and I my Garmin 550 won't have sat radio anymore.     spyder

There got to be so many non-commercial commercials and self-congratulatory breaks between music that I got tired of the XM quite some time ago.  Haven't had it for close to two years.  Enough room on the Garmin to hold enough MP3s to keep me content for most trips.

I guess I just need to work with it some more to be able to load more tunes in a organized manner.....I just enjoy the various types of music so easily accessible via the Sat. Radio.  spyder

I've had times when "random play" wasn't quite random.  Seemingly at random...   Nine days out of ten it's like a navigationally challenged Energizer Bunny though.  Just keeps going and going and going and never covers the same ground twice.

Firedood,

I'm almost there but you may need to give me more directions. I popped in a CD, and Ripped it to MP3. It appeared to play the CD, but I'm sure it did more, I just don't know what. I mean where is the MP3 version and how do copy and paste it into the SD Card?

If you ripped an entire album you should be able to find that folder in My Documents>My Music>Artist Name>Album Title. Once you've found the MP3 files then you can copy/paste them like you would any other file to your SD card.

I'd like to have sat radio too but with the 950 songs on the 550 I've got plenty of sounds for the road.

Now that I've had XM for years, I couldn't live without it, especially on long trips. It's living in the present versus the past. But ya, sometimes I like listening to MP3s too.

Sirius Satellite Radio, who bought XM, is expected to file for bankruptcy protection this week or work out a deal with the owner of Dish Network or DirecTv's parent. I hope if they file chapter 11, they can covert some of those high fixed costs into equity for the new shareholders and then be able to lower the monthly subscription to about $5. They'd get a hell of a lot more subscribers if they did.

It must have played the CD instead of rip it. I could NOT find it in My Music. Let me try it again.

A possability:

If you rip music it can end up in who knows where. Do a search for *.mp3 on your hard drives. Mine rip to a folder titled "jimsmp3s. Note I set it that way but you could have easily directed it to store your rips somewhere other than the default location by accident.
