New Bike 4 Mama
« on: September 30, 2005, 03:59:13 PM »

Yes instead of another for I, I bought 1 for mama today. Last week she went to riding classes and did well. So I went and bought her a 883 custom in white pearl.

She doesn't know about it yet. She'll be home in about 20 minutes. Pick it up on tuesday.

Ok now I'am scared to death to start riding with the wife on her own bike. She never did this before and I ain't looking forward to it. I see most man follow there wifes on the bike. I'am thinking that backwards. We live in a closed development so I told her to keep riding in circle around here and shift and stop and start and go. When she ready to start on the back roads let me know.

Lugnut, I'm sure she's taken the rider's safety course.  The next thing would be to take the advanced course.  I think that learning defensive riding techniques is as important as learning how to handle the bike.  Traffic is usually what gets you as often as a curve, gravel, or a deer/dog.  All are hazards, but impatient drivers talking on a cell phone are the worse.  Ride with her, ahead or behind, if you can stand the mental stress and give her encouragement.  She'll do great! You might not!  Har!   [smiley=beerchug.gif]   spyder

If she is leading she won't feel any pressure to keep up with you and possibly ride beyond her skills or comfort level.

Lug, this is an important one.  It's a mistake I've made.  When a good friend started riding.  First time we went out together I took off in front (didn't even think about it).  Was sure I was taking it easy; really easy.  When we stopped 20 minutes later across town it hadn't been easy for her.  Just the fact of the decisions of when to go or not go not being hers was the killer.

Congratulations lugnut, and well done! You knew I would think this way. As far as whether to lead or follow? I guess that is all personal. I have never, nor do I still want to lead. I am geographically challenged and I can lead, but would much rather ride behind. I think as long as she understands that she is to always, and I mean always no matter what, to ride her own ride, you are not likely to take a couple of corners and leave her behind.  I slow down where I want to, and take off when I want to, because I know that my husband won't take a corner and leave me.  But riding her own ride... that is absolutely wonderful.  It will be good for both of you.  Good choices on the detach windshield and engine guard, and if you get her someway to carry something of her own - an extra coat, pair of gloves, wallet, goggles kind of thing, she will feel even more independant. I drove around Fort Myer for at least a month before striking out on the city streets.  She will be fine.  I asked MrWe what reccomendations he would give, and he said to try and let her figure some things out on her own.  He drove himself crazy trying to impart a years worth of experience on me verbally. Some things just have to be learned on your own.  I'd stick close to her in the beginning, especially till she learns how to not grab a whole handfull of front brakes because someone starts to back out of their driveway or something.  She will do fine.

Looking good there!  I actually have not been paying attention to the new sporty line.  I really like that stretched out tank.  What does Mama think of it?
