Too much oil pressure???
« on: February 21, 2009, 12:43:35 PM »

Finished getting the engine back together after having the heads ported/polished and dropping in some new cams (103" engine).  While I was in there I added the Oil ByPass shim from Zippers to kick the oil pressure up a bit.  Well I'm thinkin I might have too much now.  The gauge is nearly pegged anything off idle, at idle it drops back down to below 32 (on the gauge anyways).  And I've got serious oil coming out the air cleaner now, enough to completely cover the side cover and saddlebag in oil after about 10 miles.

Thoughts???

I think you already know this but ------ you are going to have to check/remove the shim (could it have moved during installation ?)

Doubt it could have moved, not really anywhere for it move to.  But yeah, figure I'm gonna have to remove it, wanted to see what the minds on the board think before I tear into it again though.  Besides, if I didn't get away from it for a while I'd likely torch it......

Sounds like the relief valve it stuck closed, you will need to check it. The shim should olng give you about 10 to 15 psi over stock.  Doc

We use those shims by the bagfull here.
They do not create that havoc.
I'd be looking elsewhere.

Got a recommendation??  Cause if that ain't it I'm not sure what would cause it....

Stuck bypass piston in the cam plate is possible. I would put a mechanical gauge in place of the sending unit and get a real reading before tearing into the cam chest.

Oil pump "blind" O ring ????
That would cause it to sump.
Check to see how much is in the crankcase.

If it were the bypass piston wouldn't it be high at idle also??  I know my '06 with the shim in it had alot better idle pressure than this does, and was more reasonable at speed.

I'm starting to think maybe I put a breather back together wrong (don't see how) or maybe one of the O-Rings under the rockerarm setup dislodged when I was putting the rockers in.  Not sure if that would cause this or not.

How much oil is it carrying in the crankcase?

When we got done with LtBawb's bike he had 10-15 at idle and 40-45 on the highway with the new SE pump and Baisley spring.
