Should the inside of a catless header pipe be coated?

I have no first hand experience with Ceramic Coating but I have a set of non cat headers at Jet Hot being coated right now with their Extreme Silver coating. From what I've researched, it appears to keep heat down and while I can't ride, due to the weather, I decided to get them done. My approach is if something is going to reduce the heat of the 110 or felt heat to me, I'm all for it. The other benefit is your header will not change to that gold, blue, black color and reflect off your chrome.

Oh, to answer your question - on the Extreme Silver, Jet Hot is coating the inside as well. The website states it helps with the heat reduction process.

Ceramic coating will not only reduce operating temperatures, it will extend the life of your headers...   :2vrolijk_21:

Bryant,

What is the cost of doing this?  I picked up a set of 09 noncat headers and was thinking of doing having them done. I got a quote from local guy and he said around $250.  That seemed awflully high, as there is not much surface.  I understand the process, but that seems high to me.

Here's the final product
exterior

and interior

Cost was around $200.00. It's what it's worth to you.

Johnny Map,

My cost was a little higher because I went with the Extreme Silver coating. For the outside and inside spray, it was $210 and this doesn't include the shipping. I believe the Sterling Silver was about $25 bucks less. Jet Coating has some type of pricing model that adds incremental cost based on the size and length of the header and they get this information from you prior to shipping. I mentioned that the 2009 Touring Harley header was a 2 - 1 - 2 configuration and that cost more as oppose to a 2 - 1 or a 2 - 2.

After explaining what you want done, you will receive a order number that you include in your shipping package. Once they receive your headers (or what ever you want coated), they go to their computer and look at your order number and it tells them exactly what to do. From what I understand, the Sterling and Extreme Silver coating dissipates heat better and last longer the ceramic coating - I dunno if that's true for sure.

I read good and bad things about Jet Hot but for the most part, good.

I'm curious where the heat goes to keep the cylinders and head pipes cooler. Out the exhaust? It has to go somewhere.

Yes, that is the whole idea.  This has the benefit of keeping the exhaust velocity up, which will help the engine breath better, as well as having less heat radiating onto your leg.  Another benefit is that the coating will protect the steel from corrosion, and it will look better much longer than the yellow and blue chrome version.  I'm not aware of any real "con" to this process, other than the cost factor.  Just so no one gets the wrong idea, though, this modification won't make the actual engine run cooler.

Its certainly not necessary but its a feel good thing and does have minor benefits, I certainly would not tear my exhaust off the machine to have it done, but in these cases where the pipe is already in hand, Why not.

I sent out a set of exhaust manifolds for a C-18 Cat marine motor. The exhaust that runs through it is mixed with sea water to help cool it down. We have been replacing them every 2 years due to heavy corrosion. When they were pulled at the end of the season there were NO signs of corrosion.

Motor runs cooler :2vrolijk_21:   WINNER

Pipes will last longer :2vrolijk_21:    WINNER

Thanks, Bryant and everyone else.

I guess I did not realize the cost.
