Mighty Mac
« on: February 22, 2009, 02:50:25 PM »

For those who have not had the good fortune to ride in Michigan's U.P.   Here is one way in.  Stay in the outside lane unless you like 5 miles of grate.

The last time I crossed the Mighty Mac, the center lanes were closed for maintenance...  5 miles on the grating - in heavy rain - towing the Bushtec!   :'(

The first mile was white knuckle....but then I just relaxed and let the bike find its own way over the grating - but had to ignore the rhythmic wiggle of the trailer.

Best part was I was meeting friends on the Michigan side, then a few minutes later we all returned to the UP side to continue our trip...  So I got the experience twice within an hours time...

My last time on mighty mac was just before they closed it due to high winds. Breakers crashing over the approaches, leaned way the hell over to stay straight, and the grating made me real glad the bsr wasn't along. One hell of a bridge though.

OhioDave, anytime the weather is good makes for a great trip.  Fall color is great but even then it can get cooler.  Just make sure you take the time to tour the Lake Superior side.  Some really fastastic sites

I'm afraid if I look down for too long, I'll go down.  :nervous: spyder

Always wanted to go up there. It looks like such a beautiful place. Not today maybe, but in the summer.

Not sure of your route but if you decide to travel up the west side of Lake Michigan all the way to the bridge, there are dozens of great small towns to visit.  It's an easy ride and good road.  Once in the UP you might want to see the Soo Locks.  One of our favorites was in Munising on Lake Superior.  Take the boat trip along Picture Rocks National Lakeshore.  Make sure you have plenty of memory for your camera.

And when you see the "Watch for Moose" sign.....they mean it.  Have a safe ride.
