Seat problem #2...seat screw won't stay in
« on: February 22, 2009, 11:12:00 PM »

My seat screw won't stay in.  I got upset with the dealer when I found my seat hold down screw missing after less than 100 miles after servicing the bike.  Now, I have ridden a few hundred more miles and it's gone again.  For some reason, it's not staying in.  I've lost 2 now in 900 miles.  Because it was missing once before, I made sure it was in there nice and tight.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Will the upgraded screw from Harley stay in better, or should I make sure to pick up 6 or 8 of these things when I'm at the dealer next?

Did the screw have the star washer on it?

When it's missing this second time is it again only the screw missing?  Or by chance is the threaded insert gone also?

Screw had the star washer on it.  Just the screw is missing.  Looks like a brass, threaded insert still in there.

The seat tab HAS to fit over the raised area of the mounting "nut" in the fender.
Hard to explain but easy to understand.....
The seat mounting tab has a large hole that is supposed to fit over(around) the shoulder of the nut.
If the tab is not fully seated around the shoulder, it will move and teh screw will come loose!
I look from the side after installing the seat to make sure the seat tab is as far down as possible.

I had all of that in place.  I think I'm going to buy a bunch of them and keep them in the bags somewhere.  That seems like the easy solution to this problem.  I hate to put locktite in there.  I may not be able to get the screw back out.

What do you want a picture of?  The missing screw?  With the tourpack and that backdrop between the tourpack and the rear of the seat, it don't even think I could get a camera in there.  Okay, I tried and the bracket is obviously off center now, since I was pulling the seat forward to get the camera in there.

I've never run into a problem with the seat screw loosening by itself, and I don't use Loctite nor do I tighten it excessively (not a good idea with a phillips head screw in a hard to access location).  You may want to change out the nut in the fender just for grins.  Or find a fancy chrome machine screw with a socket head or hex head and then use Loctite.

They make a removable grade locktite,(blue).. I know you don't want to use a thread locker but it might solve your backing out issues.. Hang in there.. :)

I've got some blue locktite here.  That seems like my next option after I get a new screw.

Same thing happened to me!  I was pissed at the dealer too!  Then when the second one came out I felt a little remorse for all of those nasty thoughts.  (Just a little, mind you.)  The second one fell down between the strut and the fender and vibrated a nice gash in the clear coat.  I put some blue loctite on it and it has held since.  Maybe it's just the red ones that are doing it?

is it possible the nut is stripped.   I have never lost a seat screw before.  i would ask the service mgr to have the nut changed out. if thry wont do it i would change it out myself.  it's not that hard to do.
