Stock A/C with K&N filter
« on: February 24, 2009, 03:17:43 PM »

Does anybody know how much if any power would be lost by simply replacing the stock air filter with a K&N filter while leaving the plastic backing part instead of an open SE type backing?  My '08 USE seems to have enough holes on the plastic backing part to be able to flow more air than some of the previous ones.  (I'm just doing a stage I upgrade- A/C mufflers and EFI tune).

you wouldn't LOOSE any, the real question should be, how much power would you gain by getting rid of the plastic backing.

Asked one of the techs that same question.  This is a guy who runs the record holding AHDRA bike for his class so I believe he knows what he's talking about.  He said there's no benefit to running the high flow filter without letting it get more air into the box.  And there's no real good way to drill out the one that's there to cheat it.  So I bought the SE A/C and then used a modification that I got from Mr. Magoo here on the forum to continue to use the factory A/C cover.  So it looks pretty close to factory and I still get the Hi Flow Air benefits. 26,000 miles and still working.

That's kind of what I figured.  I am going to look into the new K&N Custom Intake Assembly made for -08-'09 HD FLs.  They claim you can also use your stock cover.  I love the stock cover.
-Thanks

Well, there are other benefits to the aftermarket, better filtering, and don't breakdown like the HD paper filters. But for performance, one way to look at you motor is like a tube, if you have a restriction anywhere in a tube you it won't matter what you do on one end or the other, the most restrictive point will dictate the over volume that flows through it, for the most part.

Just remember your Duracell doesn't have a stock A/C cover... It has the Screaming Eagle cover.  It doesn't even fit the Screamin Eagle Air Cleaner!  However, thanks to Mr. Magoo here I did find out if you create a nice 1/4 inch spacer with two rubber washers sndwiching a metal washer, and put said spacer between the SE A/C cover that is stock on your bike and the SE A/C backing plate you'll be good to go.  I've run it for 26,000 miles that way.  I have no idea if this will work with the K&N assembly, but I do know you can replace the SE paper filter with a K&N filter...

I called K&N and talked to one of their service people.  They said they will be comming out with a radiused inlet kit in the future for the 110" SE engines, but for now all they have is an upgraded replacement for the stock filter.
I used the Doherty Power Pacc system on my '06 USE, and it was great.  I think I'll just buy the K&N filter for now because I want to keep my stock air cleaner cover.  I don't like to have to make up parts just so I can use the stock cover.  I think there is a real marketing opportunity here for producing a good backing plate with support for the stock cover.

It's not the backing plate. It's the filter itself, in relation the radius of the SE A/C cover.  The spacer allows it fit over and by using the rubber washer's it isolates the engine vibration so it doesn't fatigue the metal and cause it to crack.  If the K&N kit uses the stock HD A/C cover it will use the SE A/C cover with the added rubber washers.  You're not really manufacturing parts... Just adding three washers.  If you take the bolt that hols the A/C on to the hardware store (HARDWARE STORE! not Lowes or Ho Depot) and aks them to get you two rubber and one metal washer to fit over it, with a diameter of a quarter you'll have everything you need.  To install, just slide the original bolt thru the SE A/C Cover, then slide a rubber washer over, then the metal one then the last rubber one and screw it back in.

Trust me, it'll work like a champ and it's easy as pie (any flavor)

You have to get rid of the black plastic which is part of the backing plate.  That is what blocks quite a bit of the air from getting around the filter.  The thing that makes the Doherty, SE, or K&N filters work is a backing plate that is open with a small velocity stack type ring just before the intake.
Doherty had a cool cover that really matched the styling on my '06 USE.  It too was only supported by a bolt in the middle, but the cover was round.
I probably will do the "roll your own" type A/C, but I still think there's room for a design improvement to support the stock SE cover.  They're pretty large and heavy.

Guys, I'm trying to help out Lyrics94 with his '08 SERK. He is wanting to get rid of the air box and put on a chrome back plate. I haven't been able to find Mr. Magoo's post in reference to this. Does anyone have the part numbers he'll need to do this job?
TIA,
AJ

Real answer to your question.....?

Almost 4hp and almost 4 ftlbs torque.

2008 FLHTCUSE3

Proven on Dyno before and after with filter the only change between runs.

[sorry - can't find the dyno chart on that one, but I know these figures for a fact]
