Aluminum finish on engine and trans cases
« on: October 03, 2005, 12:04:49 PM »

Has anyone had the finish on their aluminum cases become discolored, spotty or dull?  After my 20K service, my dealer's "detailer" or tech may have used some mag cleaner or other acid etch (citrus?) cleaner to remove the grease and it has left me with dull, discolored spots on all of the casting surfaces.  The dealer is requesting that I bring the bike back to them and let their detailer work on them.  Aren't the cases painted with something at the factory to make them kind of glisten?  My fear is that they will make the situation worse.
Any information you can provide will be most appreciated!

Try brake clean on the spots. I don't know about dulling but it will clean them and leave no spots.

You could also try the S100 engine brightener.  It works wonders on black.  I haven't tried it yet on my silver, but plan to when detailing it for winter storage this year.

One thing's for sure, I wouldn't let the guy that screwed it up in the first place try to fix it. [smiley=nervous.gif]

Dont allow the S 100 to stay on to long, it will leave spots and streaks on the silver powder coat finish that won't go away. [smiley=oops.gif]

Sounds as if you've experienced this......if so, was the engine warm or in the sun?  I've never had S-100 spot or streak if used in the shade on a cool surface.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]    spyder

Talking about the engine brightener, not the cleaner.  You don't remove the brightener.

A black motor in a CVO bike would be a nice change.  I like the look better and they are easier to clean.

Be careful and read the container first - I've run across some brake cleaners that caution to not get it on painted parts.

If the dealership knows what the "detailer" used, that would be the first thing to check.

If it was something that was left on their and dried........Dawn dishsoap works wonders.  It will strip polymer sealant, wax, polish, grease, dirt, oil and does not hurt the clear coat, paint, aluminum or chrome.

I've used it for years, on all my bikes, trucks and boat.

Jerry you are correct PAINTED PARTS not powder coated parts. Have you ever tried to remove powder coat from engine parts????? I have and I can tell you quick marine paint stripper has a hard time of it.

Does anyone know why CVO puts a powder coat engine in the SEs?  I think it looks cheap.  Personally, I'd rather have the black and chrome engine.  Sounds like the powder coat engines are a pain to clean too.  I've never had one.  That was the only thing I didn't like about the 06 SE Ultra Classic I ordered.  Hopefully, I'll learn to like it when it gets here in December.

I was told by detailer at my dealership, and have used the S100 Engine Brightener. It works, but not as good as it does on black engines. I would rather have had a black engine on my SEEG also. Personally nothing looks better then a black engine with lots of chrome. And you would think since the MoCo does offer the 103 in black we could have the option. Maybe they will look at this thread and wise up. I don't know if any of the rest of you are experiencing this problem also but I get a film of grit/grime/oil on the seam where the motor and transmission meet. I asked my service advisor about this thinking I had a bad gasket or something wasn't tightened to spec., but was told there is no gasket, and this particular area doesn't have any fluids in it. Ok, if that's the case why is it weeping, anybody else noticing this or have this problem?
