Initial HOG Membership activation?
« on: February 27, 2009, 06:29:05 AM »

All right, since I'm a virgin HD owner... I got all kinds of questions... lol

When can I activate the membership that comes with the new bike? Can I do it before delivery? Do I do it at the dealer? The reason I ask is my plan is to use the bike shipping discount to have my bike shipped from Seattle to Hawaii a week or so after I pick it up. Just wondering if my membership will be active so I can take advantage of the HOG discount.

Anyone shipped a bike through them before? I assume they just subcontract through dealers? Needless to say it is gonna be hard to hand over my bike after having on;y had it for a week and let someone take care of it for a month.  :nervous:

Do you have your Hog package yet?A long time ago when I got my first HD Hog  initial membership wasn't valid until you took delivery of your bike. Don't know if that has changed.

I would assume that in this day of instant electronic communication it would be possible for your dealer to make certain your HOG membership gets registered immediately.  This is a question best directed to your dealer, since he is the vital link in getting this set up in time for your planned shipping date.  Needless to say, if he just throws all the paperwork in the mail when his office staff gets around to it you will not get your membership activated anytime soon.

The membership is activated by the dealer. Depending on season and where you live, it can take between a week and three months to get the credentials.

When I was stationed in Hawaii (97-01) the USAF shipped one vehicle for me and I had to ship the other.  After doing some research I discovered the Navy would ship my second vehicle for $10.00.  I drove to Dan Diego and sure enough gave them my vehicle and within the month my second vehicle arrived on Oahu.  Not a bad deal if they still do it.

Good luck with your PCS.

I was told by our Chapt. Director that once HOG is notified you are registered w/in a couple of hours. And, the Chapt. Director where you live is also notified via email.

We have not received anything here so far. H.O.G. in Europe is chronically late in shipping the annual stuff. I do not know why, since the lapse of the year is fairly predictable and mailing out the stuff ist the same job, wether it is done in January or in March. Go figure ...

Are you certain that H.O.G. informs the local Chapter? I find that hard to believe. Belonging to H.O.G. and to a Chapter are two entirely different things, although you must be a H.O.G. member in good standing to join a H.O.G. Chapter. Also, in many cities there are several H.O.G. Chapters, furthermore people may choose to join or remain an entirely different Chapter. And only about 26% of all H.O.G. members are actually in a Chapter.

I'm only sure that this is what our local Chapt. Dir. told me. Don't know if it's done by zip code, originating dealer or what.

I bet each dealer handles memberships differently and would depend on whether the dealership is actively involved in the local chapter.
When I have bought my last two Harleys (from the same dealer) the HOG membership stuff is brought up by the finance person when all the paperwork is done.
I got my 15% discount on parts deal from the salesman at the time of working the sale. I think they also have a policy if you buy parts within 30 days of purchase you get a discount.
As far as National HOG the finance person did the paperwork and got me my HOG number as well as sending off my membership application. I got the card and patches etc. about a week or two later.
On local chapter HOG the finance person brought out an application and said we could fill it out at the time or we could do it later. They also took funds and had me sign accident waiver form at that time if I chose to join the local. No real pressure to join the local though.

Thanks for all the replies!  :2vrolijk_21:

My problem is my unique situation. I bought the bike through the military overseas sales program (I'm in Japan), so my "dealer" is just a guy here who sells bikes & several brands of cars. The scan & email off all the paperwork, and then arrange delivery to whatever dealer you have them send the bike to. Unfortunately they don't have a dealer in Hawaii they work with, so I can't have it directly shipped there.

So my first contact with a dealer will be when I get back to the states and pick up the bike (scheduled for delivery 24 April). I plan on riding it for a week or so, and then taking it back to the dealer to re-crate and ship it to Hawaii.

I guess about a month out I will give the deal a holler, Downtown Harley in Seattle. Should be an interesting delivery, as they are actually opening a new facility on the 25th of April. Bad things is, since I am not really buying the bike from them, I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna get any great hook-ups... especially since I'm not even staying in the local area.

I do have the vin #, so I wonder if I could just apply for a membership myself, and then they'll just tack on my free year when I get the bike? Anyone use the HOG discount to ship a bike? How significant was the discount?

Thanks for all the great info! I take back all the bad stuff I've said about you Hardley guys over the years!  :P :huepfenlol2:
