VIN Search and Warranty xfer ??
« on: October 04, 2005, 12:48:50 PM »

Can anyone tell me how I can do a search on my VIN?  I want to know the history of the bike and find out who the original owner was.   [smiley=confused5.gif]

Also, can anyone tell me how I can xfer the extended factory warranty from the original owner to me? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Thanks [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

The warranty is transferred at the dealership and there's a $50 charge for that.

Thanks, JCZ.  Can you tell me what I'll need to take to the dealership?  Does this have to be done at the dealership where the bike was purchased or can it be done at any dealership?

OK, I figured out the warranty transfer part.  Working on it now.

I've read through most of the contract and was wondering if anyone can tell me if replacing rings would be covered under the service contract?  I don't see anything that excludes it, but was hoping someone might know for sure.

Thanks

Cool.  I actually found the paperwork with the original owner's information.  I'm trying to reach him to talk about what he did to the bike.

Found out from local dealer, he is still an active HOG member and that the bike has never been serviced at a Harley Dealer since he bought it.

VIN is still showing up in Harley System under the original owner's name.

Interesting learning experience.

Something else interesting is that what the dealer is apparently sharing with you they're not supposed to.  Prior owner's names and addresses are considered private information under most state's laws.

Years ago we used to be able to do that easily.  You could walk in to a DMV and ask for the ownership history of a car and they'd provide it as a matter of public record.  Several of my car club buddies and I myself have done that trying to find history on old cars we might have been interested.

Several years ago a federal statute came down that made sharing that kind of information illegal and all the states came in line in one form or another.  Sharing vehicle history from a dealer's service database woudl be ok.  But telling you who prior owners were is something they're not really supposed to do.

Fortunately for those of us who might be interested in such things the guys at the service counter don't usually know that.  Having said that, I actually agree with the way the restrictions are supposed to work.  I don't want some fuctionary at either a DMV or a dealership passing out my name, address and phone number to people I don't know and whose intentions can't really be verified.

OK, once again, it pays (or doesn't pay in my case) to read the fine print of the service contract.  Under Part II Section 9, Noncovered Conditions it reads: This contract does not cover and does not apply to: #8. Any oil consumption or loss of compression or cylinder wear

Hopefully, someone else can learn from this, too.[smiley=bigcry.gif]

Is that for the original factory warranty or the extended warranty?

JC, that was language from the service contract (the "extended warranty").

Twolane, I forgot to mention in my post that I had a copy of the original owner's information that I found in the packet that came with the bike.  The dealership I spoke of only verified that the VIN was still in his name.  They did not give me his address or phone #.  They did tell me he was still a HOG member and that was about it.

I agree with your comments on the privacy thing though.

Even though it won't cover the "ring job" I probably need, I'm still going to have it transferred into my name since it won't cost me anything.

I've done it on at least  two bikes of mine. Just gone to the service manager and ask them to run an inquiry in their system. The original owner info, date and place of sale, etc. is listed on the printout but anything further requires that the subsequent owner(s) or dealers along the way have sent in the name and address changes against that VIN. It's a good idea to do so in case of recalls, etc. and of course all the neat junk mail potential too. :-)
