5000 Mile Service
« on: October 04, 2005, 01:48:01 PM »

Is this service something that I can do on my own? I have never serviced my own bikes but would like to start and I hate to be overcharged at the HD shop. Do many of you perform all maintenence or should certain service intervals be done by HD? Any input/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I prefer to do my own service so that I know for sure it was done and done correctly.  I do the same thing with my automobiles as well.  I would suggest that you invest in the service manuals, and after reading through what is involved you can decide if you would be comfortable doing the work yourself.

I have done all my own service since my first HD in 2001. Not very difficult. By doing it myself I know everything is getting done and done correctly. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 is a complete idiot and 10 a full time bike mechanic I would rate myself as a 4.5. Good Luck

Like Jerry said, get the service manual - preferrably the HD manual. Sometimes other manuals refer you to the OEM S.

If you can pick up a wrench and screw driver and figure out the business end and not hurt yourself, should be fine. It's not difficult, just time consuming.

I like to do other checks as well and clean some of those often missed spots while I have the bike on the lift.

I'm looking to do my own regular maintenance on my 09 street glide, and I am trying to find out how doing the work myself will affect the warranty. The dealer says it will void it, but I suspect they tell everyone that, and I feel that them wanting me to pay $360 for the 5000 mile service to be VERY insulting. by the way , Augusta Harley-Davidson is not the best dealer around, not by far.

Keep records of date/mileage when you do the services, and receipts for the parts required when doing the service. I would create a spreadsheet identical to what the service manual states should be checked/adjusted/replaced for each service and check them off as they were done doing the service. Doing them yourself will not void the warranty.

Your minor services are easy it the big ones that are a killer. Look and see when the front fluid needs to be changed and wheel bearings changed. Unless you have the tools and THE KNOWLEDGE leave it alone and find a shop you trust to do this!

The purchase for my 2009 SEUC was great at Baltimore HD store. The 1000 mile check up was a mess. I'll never go back for service.

Like I have said around here in many threads. FIND A GOOD MECHANIC! And then stick with him. There are some excellent mechanics out there. You just need to find them.

Muddypaws you are in the area send me a PM and I will hook you up with one of the best if not the best on the Eastern Seaboard! I would tell you Nation Wide but if he comes on here and reads it his head might SWELL UP!!!!
