How often do you check your oil level on the 110cui 2009 ?
« on: March 03, 2009, 02:52:42 AM »

Is it necessary to check it each week or month or even everytime you fill up the gas ?

I have 2000 miles on mine and have to check it all the time for peace of mind and I have had to add oil, about 1/2 qt so far.  Doc

This is the first vehicle I've owned since a '64 Chevy II with pistons loose enough to rattle in the bores that I've had to check oil between changes.  Seems to come out the sides and top.

Once you have checked it often enough to establish a "normal" consumption rate for your particular bike, you can then tailor your checks to your bike.  It tends to be overkill to check at each gas fill unless your bike is pumping out smoke like a barbecue pit.

Here's one suggestion to make checking the level easier.  First, most Harleys tend to blow out a little oil if you run them right up to the full mark on the  dipstick.  I've learned to purposely run mine about 3/16" - 1/4" below the full mark when hot, which dramatically reduced blowby.  Then, after setting the hot level where I wanted it, I rechecked the next day cold and marked the dipstick where the oil level showed.  This is my new "cold check" full mark.  Now you can check both the oil and the tires cold as part of a weekly ritual.  No burnt fingers, and easier to remember if you choose a particular day of the week (Saturday?) to do it all.  Throw in a check of the brake & turn signals, and you have a nice little safety check before a weekend of riding.

If its not leaking, I don't check it more than every few hundred miles.

Every time you get off the bike:  From the HD catalogue.  This is not cheap but well worth it.  You can get 20% off at a lot of places on line.

No more grabbing a rag to pull your hot dipstick. No more oil drips on your pipes and on the garage floor. Simply push the button and this chrome dipstick lights up with brilliant blue backlight. Oil level is indicated with a four segment readout - it even reminds you to check your oil when it is hot. Designed to be waterproof, the LCD display operateson a long-lasting, replaceable Lithium coin-type battery (CR2032 3V, P/N 66373-06). Display features a low battery indicator, and press-and-hold feature to toggle between Fahrenheit and Celsius. Patented.

I bought one of the LCD oil and temp gauges, not had much of a chance to ride since because of the weather to see how accurate it is, but at least will give you an idea and keep from burning your fingers and getting oil on motor and pipes. :2vrolijk_21:

Perhaps they have fixed them (no wait, the MOCO doesn't do that, it would be "performance enhanced" them), but many of these had very short lives when they came out.  Water getting in them from the top, oil getting in them from the bottom, etc.  I think mine lasted about six months, just long enough for the warranty to run out.  Wait, I'm sensing a pattern here....

Sounds like a good plan.  Thanks, Dean.
