Egad - What a bad day!
« on: March 04, 2009, 12:06:41 AM »

Been riding since 1979, and never dropped a bike until I buy one more expensive than my first house.  My second day on the road with my new CVO, and pulling into a parking spot.  I guess the dynamics of slow turning are different enough from my Heritage that I momentarily lost balance, and down it went.  Very surreal - like slow motion.  Once it started, couldn't recover, and she just kept going.  OK, embarrassing enough, but then I couldn't lift it back up.   I've seen all of these demonstrations of small girls lifting a bike back onto its wheels, and I'm thinking that "Hey!  I can do that!"  No freakin' way.  I got the behemoth about 6" off the ground, and that was about it.  But all that said, I still consider myself lucky. First, no one saw me, which saved me from the humiliation of looking like a boob.  Second, a passing biker (in a pickup truck) saw me struggling to lift the bike, and he turned around to help me.  Two heads are definitely better than one!  And finally, I now truly appreciate the value of the crash bars.  The bike was resting on the bottom edges of the fore & aft guards, and the bike sustained literally no damage whatsoever (other than a small scuff at the bottom of the lower fairing, which is not even visible).  I had been toying with the idea of removing the saddlebag guard because it was pushing into my wife's leg.  No more, brother!

So, now that it's out of my system, I don't expect a recurrence for another 30 years.

(Sh) It happens Ed.  Good to hear little damage was done, other than to your ego  ;) :)
Nice to see the biker brotherhood came thru for ya!  :2vrolijk_21:
I dropped my '07 Ultra once with the wife on back and good friends right next to us.  Pulled into the center of a parking stall where there was a hump in the middle, and was a little sunken on the sides but I didn't notice...went to put my foot down and it being a longer reach than expected, lost the balance and down she went.  Like you, no visible damage.  Live and learn and move on.

When the time will come , then everyone will let drop the bike , one earlier one later , good that you and your bike has not so much damage , but a shock in brain and you allways will remember , whether that`s good or bad , you will see , experience is the one and only way to learn thing for a human , nothing else .
It sucks but your drop is past , look forward to a never-drop anymore .  :2vrolijk_21:

Harley sells a different rear crash bar. Lower profile that gets it out from under a passenger's legs.  In the P&A catalog.

Been there - done that too. About the same w/ the same result. Glad your not hurt and that help arrived quickly. Lesson learned and now you don't have to worry about it.

Dropped your helmet on asphalt yet?  :D  :D

Last fall just as I was stopping the front wheel went into a pot hole. Just as you said it was slow motion as I went down. Right in front of several people. Some how i did get it up. Not sure how.

A few years ago I was getting set for a 4am ride to the Lake with a couple of riding buds. Had the bike parked in the driveway running, went back inside to have one last washroom break and came outside to an overturned bike. Probably didn't have the kickstand locked in. No scratches, but not a good way to start off the day. >:(

Been there too.  Just a degree or two from vertical is enough to quickly get to the point of no return.  I seemed to have had my difficulty early on when backing and turning at the same time (like in a parking lot with people around)

Screamin', manufacturer says to replace the helmet after dropping it.  How many are you up to now?

Boy, can I relate to the whole dropping the bike scenario. Was on a 2005 cross country trip and stopped in one of the first settlements in Wyoming and made the mistake of being in a gravel parking lot standing still when my right foot slipped ever so slightly and it was enough for my brand new 05 cherry SEEG to go over on its' right side damaging the upper and lower fairings and saddlebag. Found out after the trip I had $2500 in damage. No one saw me, but there was also no one to help me lift it back up after I tried the recommended method of putting your back to the bike and lifting with your legs. All I could think was that if I did that, I end up overcompensating and dumping the bike on the left side too. What to do? So I see a very small post office, basically a one room building. I run in to it and find two women working there. One was small and one was bigger than me (over 6') in height and weight (200+). Looking at the "big" woman, I say in a pleading voice, would you please help me, I just dropped my bike. She came out and helped me lift up the bike. I'll never forget that and to this day I steer clear of anthing that looks like gravel.

I've got a whole shelf full of em. Most have a ding or two of some sort. Later in life I found it it's much cheaper to drop a ball cap or do rag.

Did the ol flip flop on a fire road in South Dakota w/ my '01 Ultra. I was so pissed I couldn't even talk for a bit. As I stood and stewed I wondered why I didn't think to put down the jiffy stand before the second flop. It sucked a lot.   >:(

Me Too. I moved from a Fatboy to the SEUC. I had my wife on the back when we tried to turn into a driveway on a very steep hill. Unfortunetly there was a car backing out of the driveway. We came to a sudden stop half way through the turn and over she went.   I guess the worst part is it was my driveway and my daughter was backing out! No damage for us or more importantly no damage to Ruby!  :2vrolijk_21: I had the Super Human Adreniline Rush and was able to pick her up by myself.
