race tuner
« on: March 04, 2009, 08:33:47 PM »

A friend has the XIED module on his FLHTCUSE and says it dramatically lowered his engine temp. Can you do the same thing with the SERT? I have one but it was only used to dyno the bike and not left attached. Forgive my ignorance, learning as I go.

The XIED lowers the engine temp by altering the signal sent to the ECM from the 02 sensors. With the SERT you can change the target AFR and get similiar or even better results. I does this via software changes so there is no need to have it attached after the changes are made. When your bike was tuned the tuner typically sets the AFR in the 13.2 - 13.7 range. From the factory HD has the bikes set to run at about 14.7 AFR.

PS, Welcome to the site.......

You buy a pair of XIEDs to fit between the O2 sensor and the existing connections to the ECM. Once attached, they stay on the bike, and "correct" air-to-fuel at throughout the entire rpm range. This is a fairly simple installation that wont require a lot of technician time. Last I checked, they were not available for fly-by-wire touring models (08-09).

Since you have a SERT, you are aware that it is used for tuning on the dyno, then removed after the tuner is finished. hd-dude has probably forgotten mote than I'll ever know about tuning, etc. but I believe the SERT and similar devices are limited to what RPM ranges they cam modify.

The SERT can tune all RPM ranges and do much more than most other systems. No need to go buy something else as it can and will do the job for you.

Steve - thanks for clarifying. My reading of the manual, and I am a noob at this, leads me to believe that the richest I can get in the closed loop range is only 14.2  Does that sound right?

I am going to have the bike professionally tuned once I complete the exhaust mods, but I am reading the manual to try and learn more about all of this.

That is incorrect and correct at the same time. You can set the mixture to whatever you want but if you want it to stay in closed loop control then the limit is 14.2. So if you want something richer you just set it but it will not be in closed loop control at that spot. Hope that explains it better for you.

And if it's not in closed loop you cannot use Data Master and V-tune to tune the bike? I just want to make sure I'm correct.

You can use DataMaster but V-tune only works when it's in closed loop. Once you have the VE's set in closed loop you can put it into open loop and it will hit the target AFR based on any offset you added in the CLB tables.

The XIED is a cheap way to get more fuel in the motor and drop the temp, works good on a stock motor. My buddy has them on his, he like the change in temp. He's keeping them on until his bike goes off warranty, then major changes. But if your making changes to you bike, then you need a tuner so you can make major adjustments in certain cells , (RPM/throttle position). You could use a tuner on a stock bike, but it's a lot on money, just to drop the temp.
