Fairing weatherstrip glue
« on: March 05, 2009, 01:21:23 AM »

Anyone have to try and remove the snot glue holding on the fairing weatherstrip>

What did you use.

I did not place this in the SEEG 05 section because it is relative to all bikes with a fairing.

This weatherstrip has been replaced by the dealer 3 times. I gave up on them doing it and just ordered the parts - will do it myself.

Mine looked the same before I replaced the seals with the preinstalled adhesive.  At least the MOCO is consistent (on doing things badly the same).

I sprayed Permatex brake/parts cleaner on a rag and removed the adhesive.  Goo off or someone like that makes a product designed for removing decals/adhesives, but the Permatex product works for me.

WD40 has magic powers for everything. I would give it a try, that stuff works for everything :2vrolijk_21:

Bob,

There are two types of Brakleen out there - one is like paint remover. I really don't want to try that stuff (but I do have a case of it on hand)

My thoughts exactly.  I'd use WD40 on paint when trying to remove offensive substances, and keep the brake cleaner as far away as possible.   :2vrolijk_21:

what is the best glue to use when trying to put the seal back on after it comes off? I have to fight with a few spots now and then.

Any emblems or rubber that have pressure sensitive tape or glue hold ten times better if you use a heat gun and heat both pieces and get them pretty darn hot. Put them where you want them, you only get one chance.

Cleaning is the key to success we use Ditzler wax & grease remover in the body shop, wont get any cleaner than that, also 3-M makes an (rubber cement) adhesive that you apply only to the surface the strip will be placed, let sit for 15 min. and apply with a small amount of heat and Bingo!!  Did my daughters convertible window stripping, someone had bungled it up years back, its in about the worst possible spot you could ask for a-lot of binding in places took my time and used the primer and its held in the exact spot for 17 months, no partial peeling of anything, I'll get the product # if your fixing for good this time if you need it!!
