Oil Seepage
« on: March 05, 2009, 09:00:36 AM »

I am finding wet oil just below the primary just forward and aft of the drain plug. No it is not the drain plug. I cannot seem to locate where it is coming from. Any idea's of a common leak area??

Haven't heard of that one yet. I check the bottom of my white SEUC every so often and haven't seen that one yet. Run her in to your dealer and have them fix it before it gets worse.  One of my tourpac latches broke last weekend, they repaired it Tuesday, plus I had the the premium tourpac hinges installed at the same time..

A lot of time this is from the aft shifter seal where it meets the transmission.  I know that I've replaced it a couple of times on my bikes.

I thought it might be residual oil from when I changed oil's but I cleaned it up pretty good except where the oil from the filter runs down and behind the oil cooler. I sprayed a ton of cleaner behind the oil cooler and I don't know if that is what I am seeing because it is black oily residue that I keep cleaning off.

Are those seals a major deal? Is it something the dealer can do within a month???? I'm still under warrenty. Also is the cause of those leaks over servicing of fluids?

You might try removing the chrome oil cooler cover, oil and dirt seems to collect there. I have found an oil drip that I thought was a leak until I did this and now I just make it a regular maintenence thing.

They are a fairly big job since the whole primary needs to be removed to get to the seal.  In other words, 4-5 hours labor to change something that costs a few bucks.  Get it done under warranty, and while it's apart, have them install the chrome inner primary  ;D

Ernie I am going to clean out behind the oil cooler first and hope that is where oil is running back from.

Ernie: You were right on the money with the shifter seal leaking. About every 20,000 miles that 10 cent seal wears out and seeps. Good thing I ride alot and have almost 26,000 miles on my 08 SEUC. I have another 6 months of factory warranty and I can find these things out under warranty.

Odds are that just replacing the POS shift shaft seal with another of the same type from H-D will not correct the problem.  Many of us can attest to that, as we've had multiple failures.  Now that mine is out of warranty and I have to pay to fix it, I'm using a Cometic double lip seal recommended by many others on this site.  See if your friendly dealer will substitute this type of seal for the official H-D POS.  What the mothership doesn't know won't hurt them.

Jerry

btw, the Cometic part number is OS041, and the Drag Specialties number is 0935-0201

Great advice Jerry!  I'm running the Cometic on both of my bikes.  Desertbear, while they have it apart, have them check the transmission main shaft and 5th gear seals as well.  Also have them look to see if the inner primary bearing race has walked towards the transmission (they usually do).  If it has, Baker makes a high torque 1 piece inner primary bearing to alleviate the problem.  I am running the 1 piece bearing on both bikes since the bearings on both bike walked.  Good luck with the fix!

Ernie I will bring that up with Harley and hope they will be honest with me about those other items. Being that the bike is under Factory Warrany they will probably only due whats wrong and slap it together. If there is another way to approach it with them let me know.
