A little engine advice please...
« on: March 07, 2009, 07:48:32 PM »

Hi, I am filling my time of waiting till my bike gets (09 springer)here bye reading info till i go cross eyed. What i have learned is i am either really stupid or this is confusing for beginners. The first engine mods i am going to make is a tuner and exhaust. I am going to do a bit more depending on the budget at the time. I will be bringing my bike to a shop and having all the work done. I just want to know which direction i should go. That way i know the priority that the upgrades should go. That way when do research i can take it a bit at a time, instead of forcing a system overload on my self. That way when i go to discuss the work i want done i will have a idea the order i should be going in. I appreciate any help and advice. thanks guys this is a great forum, full of great topics..

Well the easiest and least expensive is exhaust, ECU upgrade, and air cleaner. The bottom line is how much you want to spend, and what your final goal is.

Definitely the first step.

What follows depends on your goals and budget. At what rpm range do you ride? Do you want low or mid-range torque? How important is reliability and proven results compared to pushing the envelope?  For example. 103s have had a lot less issues than 110s and can generate some pretty impressive results.

After you ride a while, you might consider suspension upgrades as well as engine work. After you get the torque power band where you want it, the difference between 95 and 105 HP probably doesn't make a lot of difference. But, unless you match the 175 lb design basis, you will definitely noticed upgraded suspension over the stock H/D stuff, especially the limp front end.

Good luck on getting your ride set up to suit your needs.

Do it correct the first time, and purchase parts that won't leave you stuck, if you decide to bring more to the plate, later.
