What's This Bolt For?
« on: March 08, 2009, 09:43:51 PM »

This bolt is at the front left side of the cases (when you are sitting on it).... the one behind it is the engine oil drain plug.

I found some oil marks around it so I pulled it out but couldn't find the source of the leak.

What's the bolt for, what should I tork it back to?

Can't find it in my manual.

Thanks in advance!

I bet it holds the two case halfs together is what it looks like to me.

How long is it?

Looks like a crankcase bolt to me.  There are 9 bolts that hold the two halves of the crankcase together, and if I'm looking at that photo correctly that appears to be the bottom front bolt.  The torque spec is 15-19 ft-lbs.

Recently I have noticed an oil leak that is cooming from the bolt... should a case bolt have oil coming from it?

Is this common?

you sure it's not blowback from the oil cooler - i.e. when you change the oil some inevitably gets down in the cooler and streams back along the bike

clean up your cooler really well, and simple green under the bike around the stain...my guess at least

You mean you guys don't take the cooler off during every oil change to avoid this  :nixweiss:

Still think that is a silly ass place to put an oil filter.

I usually pull the oil cooler off, but didn't last time... thought I could get away with it!

Thought I cleaned up the mess, but you're probably right.

I think they put the oil filter there so the front rubber engine mount stays lubricated!!!

My thoughts too - what better lube for the rubber mount then some used old dirty engine oil  :nixweiss:

Although this mark looks like it could be the inner primary o-ring
