First proper ride on Big Bertha
« on: March 12, 2009, 01:12:16 PM »

Hi all

Took my FLHTCSE4 "Big Bertha" for her first real ride today, did about 120 miles of mixed roads.  More in love than  ever, really smooth.

Noticed a few negatives:

1.  The screen creates a fair amount of turbulence, it's the right height as I can see over it, but there was a lot of wind noise and buffeting at about 75mph and was quite noisy down at 55/60mph.  Any ideas.

2. Some of the roads up here in Cumbria are not that great, noticed a bit of a clunk from the back over one bit of bumpy road - do you think the rear suspension may have bottomed out? Check air pressures?

3.  Almost impossible to get into neutral at standstill once warm and sometimes the change was a bit stiff - just needs its running in?

Don't get me wrong, I loved the ride - the buffeting and helmet noise was probably the worst bit - my helmet is a Schuberth C2 which is a quiet helmet.

Jon, I changed mine to a "Clerview" 9 inch smoked, happy now

2. Some of the roads up here in Cumbria are not that great, noticed a bit of a clunk from the back over one bit of bumpy road - do you think the rear suspension may have bottomed out? Check air pressures?

My was too low from the dealer, put about 40 psi in and it is better but could use a little more

3.  Almost impossible to get into neutral at standstill once warm and sometimes the change was a bit stiff - just needs its running in?

Break in period yes, the if the redline use it, mine just takes a tap  and in drops in to N.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the ride - the buffeting and helmet noise was probably the worst bit - my helmet is a Schuberth C2 which is a quiet helmet.

Dont wear one, sorry no input, enjoy!

2. Some of the roads up here in Cumbria are not that great, noticed a bit of a clunk from the back over one bit of bumpy road - do you think the rear suspension may have bottomed out? Check air pressures?  Check rear schock pressure, Solo i run 25-30lbs 2 up around 40lbs. Personal preference, I rather have a more positive feel.

3.  Almost impossible to get into neutral at standstill once warm and sometimes the change was a bit stiff - just needs its running in? Nature of the beast from the MoCo, At the 1k service have Redline Schockproof Gear oil installed.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the ride - the buffeting and helmet noise was probably the worst bit - my helmet is a Schuberth C2 which is a quiet helmet.

Maybe the tool kit is what you're hearing in the back.

Why didn't I think of that - I think you could be right!

Thanks

Get a taller windshield, my wife's first complaint about the new bike, problem solved.
Tranny oil went to Amsoil Gear Lube 75-110, just helped about 50%. Also check the primary level make sure it isn't too full, will cause hard neutral finds.

Have Phun.

Clearview recurve probably 12" for yuor height. ttp://www.clearviewshields.com/shop/correctshield.php

2. Some of the roads up here in Cumbria are not that great, noticed a bit of a clunk from the back over one bit of bumpy road - do you think the rear suspension may have bottomed out? Check air pressures?
13" Bitubo rear shocks, majic

3.  Almost impossible to get into neutral at standstill once warm and sometimes the change was a bit stiff - just needs its running in?
Redline Heavy Duty Schockproof in tranny, redline mtl in primary, amisoil 20-50 in engine ,get rid of the syn3 crap.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the ride - the buffeting and helmet noise was probably the worst bit - my helmet is a Schuberth C2 which is a quiet helmet.

Trot

I've ordered a Clearview recurve, but 9.5" as I want to be able to look over it.

Thanks Trot.

I couldn't find neutral the day I got mine, but by the next day mine was working fine, so it didn't take long at all.  As far as the rear shocks go, they have been completely redesigned in 09 and they need much more air.  In my 07, I ran 10 - 15 psi.  In my 09, I run 40 - 50 psi.  I noticed the same thing you are feeling on day one and took care of it on day 2.

My '08 SEUC is very hard to find neutral still after 8300 miles, WHEN STOPPED. If the bike is moving, like rolling into a stoplight, its alittle easier..
Have owned other Harleys and this is the hardest to find neutral other than my old '82 FXE which was nearly impossible when stopped with the engine running.

Ive owned 8 Harley's, 2 Kawasaki's, 1 Honda and 1 Yamaha. Finding neutral was somewhat an issue with each bike.

I know, but normally if they're a bit sticky you can slip it into neutral just before you stop or just edge forward a tad and then slip it in.  I couldn't do that the other day, but today it was a bit better.

Great day today, 50-60F, sunshine, rode out with my beloved on the Rocker.  Only did about 70 miles (getting my wife used to her bike), but a lovely time. It's so rewarding seeing your partner gain experience and enjoy her riding.

Hi John

I am in NOTTS UK and new to this site and indeed HD FLHTCSE4 trying to get ourselves to like it trouble is we have had 6 GL1800 Goldwings and we always compare it to them. But we know they are two different type of bikes. We are suffering re room and i intend moving th etour pack and the rear speakers as per a post on here when we get back from our USA trip we are just setting off on.

For what its worth my three penneth on my 110 mile outing is.

1. screen was fine but i like open air also ride with a Aria Ram III open face.

2. Suspension yea I bought the little HD pump and inflated it to 55psi lot better than zero as it arrived!

3. Getting neutral  as bike stood still yes me too very hard up and down in box could not find neutral I guess thats cos its so new? And will get better although I have a BMW GS R1200 Adventure 2009 and I was running that in last 6 weeks done 1000 mile and has never been hard to get neutral or any other gears , mindst you its a real super box very slick 6 speed and NO Clunk when she go's into first gear I shat myself when I rode "RUBY" when you put her into first gear "Blimey the dog runs off! lol

4. I will be bringing some of them new hinges back for the tour pack too from the USA and its a shame in the UK our rear ends are not finished with lights etc like the US models don't you think?

So maybe see you in the UK

see www.bikerpals.co.uk    you may even fancy joining in.

regards

Big D  :)
