CVO Paint and the factory rep
« on: October 09, 2005, 01:55:21 PM »

Had my first dealing with paint and the MoCo.
The following pictures show a "mark" about in the middle of the tour pack lid.

I took the bike to the dealer first, and with the price of the lid ($749) they made a cross sign stepped back and choked, then made arrangements to meet the rep.

I found it only when the sun was shining the right way.
From the rear you can't see it, from above it looks like a hair, and from the front (with the sun just right) it looks like a neon light!

It appears to go all the way through the clear coat. When I first found it you couldn't feel it with a fingernail. by the time I met with the factory rep you could feel one end of it.
I have 6000+ miles on the bike and have used the tour pack for less then 500. The rest of the time it sits on a homemade stand. I thought adding the spoiler might have come up, but it didn't.

The factory rep;

a. was impressed with my homemade stand, it was raining the day of my appointment
b. couldn't believe that it was a defect
c. took a lot of pictures
d. told me he would get back to me in 8-10 days
e. he did not
f. 6-7 weeks later he called the dealer and said to order a new lid [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

After my appointment I put the tour pack back on the shelf and covered it. Last week when I shot these pictures I found another similar but smaller mark......................

That's funky Duane.  You said first you couldn't feel it then you could.  Is it a crack in the clearcoat that started from the inside and worked out.  Maybe they didn't use enough flex agent in the paint mix?

Porthole,

I had a similar problem with my Tour Pak lid, except mine was a perfectly straight line approximately one inch long.  Didn't see it until the light hit it right, then it stood out like a neon sign.  The dealer didn't argue, but it took 3 months to get a replacement.

You guys have good dealers. At my dealership upon delivery of the bike I was asked to inspect the bike.If I found something right then and there they would get it fixed, but once I drive it off the lot, cosmetic damages would be my responsibility. In other words if I found something later on, then it must have been me who did it since I said the bike looked ok on delivery.

Part of the same story but a different subject, I have been waiting for close to 4 mnths for my rear fender from the mocco, cuz I did notice the nick in my paint during the delivery inspection. Maybe one day it will show up.til then I am riding around looking like I backed my bike into something.

That is a common practice, not only at H-D dealers but also at auto dealers, and only applies to damage, such as dents, dings, chips, and scratches.

Just to be the devils advocate. I would bet money that before it starts to cost H-D any more money, they will find a way to "invalidate the warranty" perhaps the owners of these bikes with

Jerry is right, there are some dealers that will "try your patience" and some factory reps that do the same. I don't think H-D is out to screw their customers. I have had some good experiences with them. As Jerry said, there are consumer protection laws in place. sefatboy scott...yes I think you Will get your fender. You gotta remember this is a custom paint. They are not doing them on reg. production. When a customer has a paint issue it is pretty obvious if it was their fault. You would not believe the dumb things some people do. I heard a guy the other day complain about the scratches in his paint that appeared after he cleaned it. He even brought the shop rag in that he used to show the service guy. This thing was dirty, greasy and had something gritty on it. The service guy had the detail guys work on it and they got the marks out. They were amazed that the customer was this "clueless" [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Actually, even H-D admits that use of non-Harley parts, lubes, etc. will not void the warranty unless it can be proven that the part caused the failure.

JCZ,

You beat me to it. But if you have the act saved why not post it? I did a search on the I-net  but you get so many hits it is hard to actually find the "act".

I worked in new cars years ago, and the act was a boom to customers, even helped the people who obviously did not take care of their vehicles.

Bottom line when it came to oil changes, it was incumbent on the dealership - factory to PROVE the customer did not maintain the service interval, which is impossible.

I have done many motors and transmissions over the years that failed due to neglect, but heck Chrysler offered a 7 year power train warranty, so why maintain it [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
