Oil Level and Temperature Dipstick with Lighted LCD Readout
« on: March 15, 2009, 11:46:41 AM »

:help: Would like your feedback both positive and negative regarding the "Oil Level and Temperature Dipstick with Lighted LCD Readout."  Part# 63004-09, bottom of page 424 in the H-D 2009 Accessories and Parts catalog.  What's the word on this?  Did they make an improvement on the one offered last year?  They (moco) indicate its new and began offering it September '08.  Your expertise and feedback will be most appreciated!

John, have had one one my SERG3 since October.  Seems to work fine... no issues here.

I had an older one on my 06 RK and the head of the unit just popped off. I was going to take it with me when I traded it in on the 08SEUC. I just stuck it back on and went about my trade-in. I bought a newer one last fall and it is working great no issues.

GREAT!  That's what I wanted to hear!   :pepper: Was trying to decide whether to put a oil temp meter in place of the useless air temp meter or get the other one but didn't want to get another useless gauge.   :dankk2:

I can weigh in on this.  I to contemplated replacing the airtemp gauge with an oil temp gauge.  The cost of both the in dash gauge and the dip stick is the same.  For two hours labor, they can install an oil temp sensor in the oil pan for read out in the dash.  That gives you a continual temp that is very useful, IMO.  To tap the oil line before or after the oil cooler, which seems to be the dealership less relevant response, doesn't cut it.

People say that these gauges are accurate but that is an issue of faith as I asked about calibration and the parts guy's eyes glazed over.  At least it will give you relative temps if not accurate temps.

Now that I have the dip stick, I would not buy it again.  On my CUSE, to lean the bike slightly at a stop sign, activate the button and read the temp is scary.  The bike is too heavy, center of gravity too high, and the readout is recessed in such a way that it is difficult to read while sitting on the bike.  I can read it only when I am off the bike.  I had really wanted to read it while riding.  This 110 runs hot so an on going oil temp readout is important to me.  This dip stick misses the mark.

If I had to do it again, I would pay the extra money and install it in the dash with the sensor in the pan.

Take your best shot.  Good luck.

I'm wondering what the difference is on the "new" one too.  I have the old one (worked fine!) that was on my 07 CUSE² and I kept it to go on the 09 CUSE4. Haven't fitted it yet, as I don't know if the change is something that will mean it's no good for an 09....

I had the old style on my 2003 Road King, the head popped off while doing 45 MPH, oil everywhere!!!!

I had a new style on my 2007 SEUC, the lens fogged up, could not rread it.

I have the new style on my 2008 SEUC, does not give accurate readings.

No luck for me with this part!

hello;  all , i have the new temp dip stick and the temp guage in the fairing  , i have it set up that the guage is setup AFTER THE COOLER  - gives me the cooler temp coming out of the cooler , and i have the temp dip stick - that gives me the current temp of the motor .. i am very happy knowing temps on both ends and  that the cooler is working properly.. i have noticed that with the new DIP STICK  that it will even tell you if you have to much oil in the case - IT COMES UP SAYING "" HI-OIL "".. i was surprised at that...  thanks all , jeff

You have to tell us what temperature differences you see between the two.

Since i have the SERG this might not relate but here ya go.
the gauge in the fairing wont work for me because the the back light is different that the others.
I have the temp/level dipstick and to insure its worked right I used a lazer gun and shoot the oil to confirm the DS is working  right, shot it cold/hot et al. mines within 2 degrees of accurate.

I have the dipstick and I just bought it...cant tell you if it is old or new model.  I had it on my previous ultra and really liked it.
I mostly look at it after engine shutdown to check oil temp.  I think it is one of the most useful items I have installed.  My guess, If you buy it you will use it a whole lot more than you think.
Nice to know your oil is not low with the push of a button.
