Saved my knuckles but ...
« on: October 09, 2005, 02:04:04 PM »

So, my big old bat wing fairing stopped a road missile this week.

This center circle of the chip is about 1/4 inch, and it looks like it damaged the fiberglass.

And I never heard it hit [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

now you've got a 'porthole' in the front of the scooter.

Yowee, that's a big'un.  My red one has four or five rock chips in the fairing and a couple are decent.  But I got no chunks like that one.

If the fibrerglass is as damaged as it looks like it is and you're looking for a place to fix it just take it to a body shop that works on Corvettes.  They're used to fixing rock divets on the noses of fiberglass.  They'll think it's an everyday thing.

I got one last week but it is much smaller. Just looks like a dead bug. I knew exactly when it happened. A guy was mowing along the highway and the mower threw it at me. It's not too noticeable so I'll probably leave it alone. If you ride em, it's going to happen.

I just installed something called invisible bra on my wife's car.  Made by 3M.  Do a search and you will find many on the net. For the most part the kits are pre-cut and several of them have kits for Harleys, and a pretty complete kit is 100 bucks.

I do plan on getting one for my 05 CVOElectraGlide after I repair several small nicks and bruises.  A buddy of mine has an 06 Ultra CVO on order and we will put a kit on his before it hits the road.  Here is one site to take a look at, Stickercity.com.

It was the first time I tried anything like this and all in all it went pretty well.   Just follow the instructions and take your time.  I will say that after I was finished,(car is red) that if you are three feet away, it is truly invisible.

Tom, what about from less than three feet?  Under the backrest (where I've got it installed) it can't be seen.  What does it look like in an open area out in the sun?

Hey Twolane....In the sun the stuff looks great.  You really cannot see it at all, however if you get close, you can see the edge if you are looking toward the edge line.  If you look at it from any other angle, you cannot see a thing.   The only time It looks anything other than invisible is if you have the car under strong florescent lighting, then you can see a bit of texture difference.  But, I learned long ago if you are trying to detal anything under that light source, you will go insane trying to get the finish perfect.

I am going to buy some bulk film next and apply it to a red GMC cargo van I have.  That thing draws nicks like a fly to honey.  The only draw back to buying bulk is you have to cut it yourself to fit the application, and it's not the easiest thing to cut.

I don't think this film would have helped much for the missle that hit the fairing in the start of this thread, but it might have helped a little.  I found an article on the net about some testing a guy did with an air rifle and pellets.   It was pretty amazing what the film acutally prevented vs no film.

I had the invisible bra on a Porsche for 2 years. Slowly but surely it really started to look like chit. It would never be as shiney as the rest of the car and stood out like a sore thumb. Wouldn't do it again. I had the dealership take it off and the car looked much better. If you ride/drive them you are going to get chips. Fix them and move on. My .02
