Well, I have been thinking about this topic for some time. Over the last year or so we have been reading a number of informative posts from some mighty fine folks who have shared their builds. Some of the guys that come to mind are Hoist, Hogasm, Sport Gordy, Black Diamond, Sandunbar and quite a few others that have either built 117" motors or dropped in a Jim's etc. I have just about driven my wife nuts by continually talking about replacing my 110" that I just plain hate, period. I want it out but I have not figured out which way to proceed. I have been following the builds closely and have been patiently awaiting my turn. I have to think about service if and when it is required because unlike many of you I can't do a complete engine rebuild without a great deal of help. I'm thinking some go with builds designed and built by shops that they are reasonably close to.

My wife and I were at a Sunday service when our Pastor mentioned we look up a versus in the book of James, I whispered to her that I already knew what it was, it was the Lord sending me a sign and we had to comply with James 1 verse 131 and I should just comply and get it ordered ASAP. I thought I had her, she was going through her Bible and realized that James or Jim for short didn't go that far and chuckled out loud. I assured her that my bible was different and there was a James 131. This is no BS, it honestly happened about 6 weeks ago.

To the guys who installed a Jim's 131 can we please hear about your installation. I had e-mailed Kirk (sport gordy) and he was just breaking his motor in at the time, and I have not heard back.

How about the guys who built the 117" would you go that route again or would you consider a Jim's 131?

I'm not planning to do much until next winter. I do, however, want to be prepared in case I have a major breakdown this spring or summer. The more info we have on our attempt to cure the 110" the better prepared we will be to make a decision on short notice.

It's too bad the 2007 and up limit what we can install. I live near R&R and have seen their approach to external oil lines and other creative methods required to get their 139" and 155" to fit.

This has the potential to be a great post!

Thanks in advance

Hey Ray. I built a 117 last year and love it. I wouldnt change a thing on it..Well except exhausts, but that's me.LOL..
As for a Jims motor. They are not bad performers out of the box. But on the other hand they are not stellar or bullet proof either. They still come with a weaker crank, could use a little headwork and some other fixings...

My 117 has all the fixings, was cheaper and makes better power than a out of box 120 and some 131's
I have Hillside custom headwork
Bob Woods PSI springs
S+S roller rockers and pushrods
Axtell 4.125 bore cyls
J+E/Axtell pistons
S/e crank trued, balanced, plugged and welded by darkhorse
Timken conversion done by Hillside
Case boring done by Hillside
S/e billet cam plate and 07 style oil pump
Baisley spring
Wood's Tw9BG cams and gear drives
Dtt ignition
D+D Fatcat with perf baffle, but i also have a boarzill in route to me to try as well
S+S "D" manifold
Mikuni HSR 48 carb
Woods kf325 air filter

It starts easy every time, gets great mileage and is fun to ride....And it beats all my friends bikes at the ame time...

any questions i could answer???

DSMBagger,

Curious about the cranks as I know they had issues with some of the early 120 cranks with the B motors but those have all been resolved, can you elaborate further on the issue with the "weak cranks"?

Whats your 117 put out btw sounds like a real nice build?   Best part was it beats all my friends bikes gotta love when it all comes together for a win/win situation.

James 131 from the book of Harley??? That's a hoot. Even with all I went through with my 117 (and I'm still going through  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=34789.0 ) I love my 117. It is reliable. Never caused a problem other than something was amiss in the equation.

If I was starting over, it would still be a 117 c.i. but I'm a little hardheaded!

I just feel that the cranks should be plugged and welded. Why put together a kick ass 131 and have a stock style crank in there.  I have a Jims crank in my bike and before i installed it Dark horse fixed it out of the box by truing, plugging and welding..  I also don't like Jims Lifters at all. When i worked at the dealer selling thunder mountains i pulled more of those motors for blown lifters than i want to remember..  If you are dead set on the 131 at least fix the crank, swap out to hd b lifters.

I also preferred to keep my stock cases.  As for what mine puts out, not sure, but in a week or 2 i will post my dyno sheet from the tuner. I just swapped carbs and pipes so i need to ru-tune it.

I've talked to Jim's about a 131. They will have the crank welded an trued before motor is built so you can have the 1 year warranty. Other wise you have to buy the kit and only get 90 day Warranty. I was quoted $365.00

Hey RayG, I am finally broke in with my 131 (in my 08 Ultra 105 Anniversary bike) and had a final Dyna Tune last week. Started out with my own base map, first with Master Tune, but changed it over to SERT midstream during my break in.  I was pretty proud of my base map as the bike ran great throughout the break-in. Turns out i wasn't even close to pulling all the power out of this motor. First off, i was ruining a tad lean, up in the 15's, secondly the motor was pulling 109 HP and 103 TQ before the tune. After the tune we are now pulling 127 HP - 126 TQ and I'm getting 37 Mpg. The ride home was like riding a whole new bike. The bike pulls strong through every gear, and passing in 6th gear is just a breeze. The tuner suggested messing with my Supper Trap 2:1 exhaust to find more HP, but I was happy with the 127 HP and didn't want to take a chance with a louder exhaust. Right now i have 12 disc in the exhaust and we are a somewhat quiet; and this is what i want. I went with the SE 58mm throttle bore, SE high flow injectors, Supper Trap 2:1 Megaphone exhaust, Scorpion lock up clutch, and Harley's HD starter. I would do this all over again given a choice, I just like the idea that i can remove my monster motor and trade the motor back to stock if i ever get the itch to trade up, or down. I built to many motors in my bike years, only to let someone else have fun with em... I'm keeping this motor for life   :bananarock: And this is the only reason i considered going with the JIM's. Buying the motor from Jenni at Tri-County helped a lot to. She gave me a huge discount, no tax, and a break on shipping.

Good luck with your decision, it's a hard one.

Might want to consider an S&S 126" from G2 Motorsports.  http://www.starracing.com/vengines.php

If you want performance then call Randy at HYPERFORMANCE 515-266-6381 He builds Big Cube Motors and is known as the King Of Cubes... www.kingofcubes.com  My 131" has 156.91 HP & 159.98 TQ tuned by Daniels Performance in Las Vegas...

The Confererate Motorcycle that set a Land Speed Record at Bonneville in 2008 had a Jim's 120" reworked by HYPERFORMANCE and R&R Cycles...

1 of my buddies has a 120" Jims, mid 120,s hp and tq. Another has a 131" Jims, 136 hp and 140 tq. No problems....... yet. We'll see if they sacrifice reliability for all that power. After all they are racing engines.

The 110 can be fixed for a lot less. Next on the power ladder IMO is by using Axtell cylinders and making the 110 a 117" and fixing the bottom end with a Hoban trued plugged and balanced crank. The 110 heads will ride shotgun the whole way and become excellent performance pieces with some rework.
All the 110" issues go away but it's a shame to spend 32+K for a bike that is just a starter kit.

We have built quite a few 117" over the past 30 months.
They spool up quick and hold togather very well.
Outstanding power delivery, as well as cool running, and good fuel ecomony. Great engine.
As Dewey said, the 110" can be brought up to a level of ferocious power via several ways, and we have dedicated, reliable combinations that we have delveloped.
JIMS engines are ok, but there is a ton of power hiding in them, as we showed when one of our clients established a Land Speed Record, at the Maxton Mile, on his Hillside Motorcycle & Machine prepped, JIMS 120".
I might add it took out the old record by 11 mph, and was done on a bagger as well. :2vrolijk_21:

I put the Jims 120 in the 07 SEUC after having engine problems. I absolutley love it.

Since buying the 09 SERG, I love it. Feels lighter, more nimble, and at top speed, it's dead line straight. I could ride one handed at 120. I'm thinking seriously about dropping a 131 in the SERG.

Yea, I know, I'm sick.
