Military sales vs Dealer price
« on: March 19, 2009, 01:58:53 AM »

Guys, just a quick question regarding buying a bike from the dealer or through military sales. I have never purchased a new bike from a dealer. I have how ever purchased 2 bikes through military sales overseas. I have several guys I work with thinking about buying bikes while we are over here in the sand box. I told them it was a myth in regards to not having to pay sales tax (unless you are from Oregon or Delaware). I have attached my invoice from when I purchased mine. Could you tall me the dollar savings. I know avalibility was a driving factor for my choosing military sales. They had 2 - 09 SERG's your pick of color and delivery date avalible when I bought mine.

Crusty, did you purchase your through military sales in Japan?

I did get mine through military sales. You're right, no sales tax break from this program. Good news is you can write off the sales tax!

We get a pretty good break... but not as great a deal as we normally would during good economic times when the bikes at deals are going for well over retail... since they are selling right at retail now, we're only getting a couple $K break.

Please expand on how to write off the sales tax? I've never heard anything about writing the sales tax off.

It is one of the perks in the latest stimulus package... you get to write off the sales tax on any new vehicle, m/c, or RV purchase after Feb 17!

MSRP  on the Road Glide is $30,999, plus the $375 freight, then what ever a dealer prep charge may be, but looks like you saved a couple thousand anyway.  I believe you will have to pay sales tax once you register it, TX is 6.25%

Also, like Crusty said, if you do pay the sales tax you will be able to write it off on your 2009 income taxes for buying a motocycle.

Most of us are paying about $32K even.  In GA, I paid $1,900 in taxes as well.  If you buy and keep the bike overseas for a year or two, you won't have to pay state sales tax.  That is where I came out GTG on my 04 Road King Custom.  If you have your bike delivered CONUS, you'll most likely have to pay the local state sales tax where ever you register it.  Still, I suspect you're getting a better deal than those (most) of us living in the states.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong :drink: :drink:

BTW...Thanks for your service!

I bought a 2006 FXSTS Springer Softail when I was in the sand box in 2005.  I had my wife check around with local dealers getting quotes before I went this route...  Everydealer was to start about $1500.00 more than Military sales.  You will pay the local taxes when you pick up the bike.  You save on the 5 year warranty, HD provides it.  You also save on the dealer prep, shipping and dealer mark-ups.  Overall that bike was a $2500.00 savings whick I quickly used in chrome and extra goodies.
