Spotlight questions
« on: October 11, 2005, 01:09:44 AM »

Has anyone put "extra" driving or spot lights on? Got a few dark roads out here and can easliy overrun the OEM stuff...

Jim, the only thing I've  seen done on a bike with lowers is the auxiliary running light kit that normally mounts on the crash bar mounted horizontally but turned vertically and hanging outboard.  Like hanging above the footpegs if you had pegs mounted.

It is.... well..... funny looking; at least to my tastes.  This stuff is all about anyone's individual tastes.  So the fact that I didn't care for it doesn't mean squat.  But we don't have a lot of place to mount auxiliary lighting.

Had seen the HD lights, had alsoe heard lots of issues with blowing bulbs.

My first thought was to come with some sort of bracket that used the center engine guard mount and use either a 4.5" shell and HO light or a slim 4"x6" with some 100 watt bulbs...

ALso wonder if anyone knwos how much "room" is on the electricals.

Jim, do a search for the Gerbing heated clothes thread.  Somewhere in there I have the information from my source at HD regarding the electrics......what the bike uses while running, what the output is and what's available in regards to amps.

Since we are talking about spotlights, I'm sure we have all noticed when we turn on our Highbeams, the spot lights go out.
Has anyone changed this so when you turn on the highbeams the spot lights stay on ?

I wonder what it takes to do that and if it would be worth the trouble.

05Rider,

That sure looks like what came in mine when new. When out today, stopped at an Indy shop and they had some 77,000 candlepower spots (37.5 watt draw). They were $18 each, so picked up a pair. The also had some 110,000 candle power, but were out.  Found the PIAA and Sylvania SIlverstar H4s. Will definitely be trying one of those, especially since the output was double the current output with the same amperage draw.

Did find something interesting though, think it was by PIAA or Hella, was a HID driving light, The unit was about 2.5" x 4.5", the ballast was in the housing. Both lights, wiiring kit and a bracket mount - kit was around $260. I think it was www.brightheadlights.com. Looks like the had some good pricing as well. Something like that could be mounted on a engine guard bar with a clamp and then a small right angle bracket, they would be a "fixed" light rather than move with the front end.

Still have some checking to do.. May have to go for the alternator upgrade!

Just an update in case anyone was wondering since ter ehas been some discussion of HID lighting and other things...

I found a web site, www.danielsternlighting.com, spent about 2 hours reading thru his explanations and discussion s of why most SAE lights are crap (his words not mine) After half a dozen emails and two phone calls, he made a reccomendation to me on headlight and spotlight upgrades. On the headlight, a Cibie 7" headlamp replacement and a H4 High Efficiency bulb. The bulb is a German OSRAM Silverstar, no relation to the Sylvania Silverstar. I tried the Sylvania and yanked it out the same night, did not care for the "blue" HID imitation light at all. The new bulb is rated for 65/55 watts, but puts out over 2600 lumens, a normal headlight bulb is someplace between 1000 and 1200 at 12.8 volts.

On the spotlights, he showed me a set of German made set ot spotlights, that have a maximum beam pattern of just over 220 meters by 20 meters using a 35 watt H3 buld. Yes, the numbers are 220 meters and a 35 watt bulb. Yeah, I didn't beleive it either.

So, got a headlight, couple of bulbs and two of the spotlights coming. Total cost to light up my night life - just under $210. Parts will be here next week and I'll shoot some before and after pictures....

Some great comparisons here. I ordered a set of the H-D passing lights with the halogens and will try out the PIAA bulbs in them. I've already installed the H-D Dual Bulb Halogen headlight and it'smuch better than the orignal, but could use some more lumens. It has a  H11 (55W) low beam and H8 (35W) hi beam, so will see what PIAA or others have to improve on that. One can never have enough light [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

My understanding is that all the 06 touring bike have a 50 amp charging system now instead of the 35amp unit in the 05 and older bikes.

This second pic is the Cibie headlamp shell and the new H4 OSRAM high efficiency bulb. Again, the distance from headlamp to door is 15'

Notice in the picture with the Cibie that the beam pattern is wider, with less scatter and a sharp vertical cutoff on the left side so as to not blind oncoming traffic, and the right side angles upward to better illuminate road signs and creatures.
