Schuberth J1 helmet
« on: March 25, 2009, 07:29:33 AM »

Dear friends, I have the following problem:
I wanted to buy an HD helmet (3/4) to get the communication equipment that comes with the 09 SEUC installed. Unfortunately this helmet did not fit me (the helmet bends my ears) and I had to look for an alternative. The recommendation was a Schuberth J1 helmet which fits perfect. The dealer (Hein Gericke, who provided very good service) told me that they must send the HD equipment to Schuberth, Germany to get it installed. Everything was clarified upfront with Schuberth Germany by phone, but after 1+1/2 week Schuberth sent the HD equipment back to my Hein Gericke dealer and they said they will only install their own communication system and no other one. This is not the service I expect from a high price premium supplier…
Now my question: Does anyone have experience with the installation of the HD communication equipment in the Schuberth J1 ? Is there a solution so that I can install it by myself ? Or should I go with a alternative (except the HD ¾ helmet which does unfortunately not fit). Which one ?
Thank you very much for your help !

You may want to consider J&M Electronics Elite series headsets.  MUCH BETTER quality than the HD set.

As for the installation you may want to consider Sierra Electronics.  I bought the J&M's from them and was planning on installing them myself in two new Shoie Multitech helments.  When I looked at what was involved in installation into a flip face helment I decided to have someone else do it.  Turns out Sierra also does installation.  I shipped the helments and headsets to them Monday and they did the installation the day they recieved the package and they or on the way back to me now.  They charged $75.00 labor (Two helments).  They charged me $184.00 each for the headsets verses $229.00 from J&M.  J&M also has two other headsets, the Performance model is about $136.00 and Bluetooth is $250.00.  Great customer service at Sierra!

Hi Alfred,

I am using the J1 since it came on the market. I had two helmets recently safety-tested and completely refurbished by the Schuberth Service Center, not cheap, but very good service. I am surprised that they did act up on the HD installation. Maybe you give them a call directly (best very early in the morning like 07.30 am):
Customer Service
Schuberth GmbH
Stegelitzer Straße 12
39126 Magdeburg
Germany
Phone:    +49 (0)391 8106-555

For communication I am using a Scala Rider, which is mounted to the chin guard, not the helmet itself. That maybe a solution for you as well.

Ride safely,
Louis

I've got a Schuberth J1 and it's got an Autocom headset fitted, which is more difficult than the HD one to fit I think.

If you go on the Autocom website you'll see fitting instructionsfor the C2 which is very similar in make up to the J1 apart from it's full face, but I bet any reputable dealer who sells Autocoms would fit it.

I think you may be able to fit the Harley one without takling any lining out?

Hi all,

Louis thank you for the contact info.
2 days ago I called Schuberth Service in Germany about the installation of the HD communication set to the J1 helmet. Result: No Chance. They told me that they are simply not allowed to install it. (They did not say it does not fit or so.) The only option I have is to try to install by myself or I should ask my HD dealer to install... This weekend I held a J1 again in my hands and decided that installation by myself is too risky. I am very disappointed with the Schuberth service. I still would like the J1 but it looks like I have to look for another helmet.

Regards, Alfred

I am not surprised that Schuberth will not fit it as the may be concerned about product liability.

I'd go to a dealer that sells headsets and ask them if they'll fit a HD one to yours.  Hein Gericke in the UK said they'd fit mine to a helmet I was buying from them.

I'm impressed with my J1.

Jon

I can fully understand, that you are disappointed. It may be a safety issue. At least, now you know for sure. I would suggest you try to mount the unit to the chin guard. I went into the garage and looked at the HD set, which came with the bike and should be the same as yours. I am using the Scala Rider, but the principle is the same. Take a look at the pictures I took just now for you, here is 1 of 5.

Ride safely,
Louis

And last, but not least, in picture 5 of 5 I present you the material used in addition to what HD provides. Simply use the metal strip from these paper filers ;-))))

Once you remove the cheek pads, the covers of those should easily come off.  You should see a pocket where you ear sits.  This will hold the ear piece.  You may have to remove some foam for optimal fit, but it may go without removing any.  You can put one speaker in place and put the helmet on to see how it fits.  The add or remove as needed.  You want the speaker to be right over your ear canal.  I had to add some padding for the wife's helmet to get the speaker to sit well (Autocom system).  The J&M system didn't need the extra padding that she has now.  There will be a crevice around the lower portion of the helmet behind your neck where you can bury the wire to the other speaker.  As far as the microphone, you'll only have to clamp it on the lower section of the helmet and put the boom where you want it.  It should be a very simple install, once the cheek pads are out.

They should just pop out, though it may take some force.  Try pulling on the forward most end first, and if thta doesn't work, try pulling on the bottom.
