Any way to modify drivers backrest?
« on: April 05, 2009, 07:53:08 PM »

08 Stock SERK seat w/ Drivers Backrest...

I wear a very heavy vanson leather with a hard armor in the back.  With the standard backrest,  I can only move it up and down.  I need to be able to move it back,  or it pushes me too far forward..

Does harley make a mounting kit for the backrest that will allow me tilt along with the height?

This is a biggie for me,  as I want armor,  but cant use the backrest....

Thx!

I have seen a few threads where it may actually tilt back with a set screw?  Not near the bike now,  but this may help?

You can put them in a vise and bend them easy. The metal is actually softer than I thought it would be. T.

I added 2" in height and added 2 45's to mine to make it comfortable.  So yes they can be modified.

Not familiar with the 2008 set up, but for what its worth, I hated the stock seat ( still not thrilled) on my '09 SERG. So I put the backrest in a vice, and heated up the two support bars with a torch and bent the backrest pad back about 1/2 inch. Surprisingly, it improved the comfort and rideability for me in a big way.

I fitted the adjustable backrest i had on my previous non VO Ultra. The adjustable latch that fits on
the bike wont fit my  08 cvo but i adjusted the rake angle with cable supplied to where i want it and leave it there, still being able to adjust the height anyway the cheap looking cvobackrest with the staples
showing and is uncomfortable is sitting in the spares box

I happen to agree!
When I first purchased my bike I sold the backrest that came with my 08FLHTCUSE3 to another HOG member that did not care about comnfort as much as I did. (at half Price!)
Then purchased the basic and wider backrest that I had on my previous bike.
I then took the adjustable bracket under the seat and moved it as far as possible for my particular fit.
It did pull the slot open farther on the seat than it was but over time it has molded in and looks as good as it did before my adjustments. It now works well for me, and as previously mentioned it can also be heated and bent to be more comfortable if necessary. I wanted to be closer to the handlebars, with my desired fit,but farther away can also be accomplished with this adjustment.
Just my opinion!

Any pictures of the modified backrests? I am in the same boat, but would like to see what someone did.

Thanks

Did the torch burn the black paint off & what about the upholstery/padding?   :nixweiss:

I have an 05 SEEG  :cherry: and had the same issues with the rider backrest. Put it in a press and bent the two support arms slightly without any heat. Didn't take much, but now the angle is right for my riding position and very comfortable.  :)

Those brackets are easy to bend or modify. I did mine and it made a huge difference.

Hey Bayou,

Yes the torch did discolor the paint on the backrest support bars.  Easy touch up with any black semi-gloss.  As for the upholstered part, I wrapped it in a soaked towel while heating up the metal.  Make sure you stuff some of the wet towel into the opening of the leather.  This baby definitely got hot during the bend, but nothing burned.
