How to improve reliability of the CVO 110??
« on: April 07, 2009, 07:07:33 PM »

Hello all

I have a Fat Bob 09 CVO with the 110.  I've done the simple stuff to protect it -- high flow exhaust, oil cooler, better idle AF ratio.

IF I am to do CAMS, PISTONS and Head Work -- I certainly don't want a hotter engine -- in fact I want a cooler engine that has more torque/horsepower.  Through the magic of the right recipe of parts and work -- I know this is possible.

What combination is proven to accomplish the above??? assuming I can I keep the Jugs, heads and pistons, to minimize cost.

Has the 09 been significantly improved over earlier 110's ??

All knowledgeable first hand advice is appreciated !!!!

John

If I were doing it there's no way I'd keep the cylinders and pistons.

I second that.  One of the real weak areas on the 110's is the cylinders (cheap, poor quality).  If I were going to invest a significant amount of cash on a build, the jugs would be one of the first things to hit the scrap pile.  If I planned on a significant power increase, the next thing would be having the crankshaft trued and welded.  Like the old Fram commercials, "you can pay me now, or pay me a lot more later".  Oh, and while you're in there you need to upgrade the drive side crankshaft bearing as well.

On second thought, why not just sell the 110 and install a Jim's 120?

Thanks to all -- OK -- got it -- and you guys are CVO owners??? JEEZ - what do people that hate Harleys sound like ........  Just a joke folks !!!

I understand the Cylinders and Pistons = JUNK

Restricting my question to just a cam change --

What type cam would likely decrease engine temp due to better valve timing??

-- for example -- I figure longer exhaust duration would do the trick -- but I have no info to base that on.

With out taking on the expense of swapping cylinders just yet, keep doing some research on heads, and cam timing. You might check out TMan Performance in NC, I have heard some positive talk locally through a couple builders about him.  http://www.tmanperformance.com/

Sold several and Deweys own personal bike uses Andrews TW32. It cools them right down and relieves a little cylinder pressure due to the later intake close of 46 VS stock of 25. Deweys springer makes 103hp 113tq without tuning just a TFI and stock redline 5,200? these numbers were before any headwork just a light cleanup mill when the heads were off to replace the seals.
Another popular choice is the Woods TW7, a bit shorter and it is a torque monster.

I had my worries but I was surprised with the stock CVO springs they are slightly noisier than stock but not bad at all even with the motor at full temperature on a hot day.

The only way to improve the reliability of the 110 is to remove it from the bike and start all over. You could build a nice 120 or 124 with your factory cases. You would have a street screamer with that light bike.

Well that is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard you say Dawg.
The guy is asking about a 09 110, how many of those you own?
How many 110's have you owned that gave YOU trouble?
Be careful, I know you love it, but that George Dickel has been know to make men say crazy things!

ONE, The only one I have owned. The motor is inferior to the eariler models because of the cheap A$$ cylinders they have put on the motors. The 09's are better but still not proven. Give me a 103!!!!!! By far the most dependable motor of the two cammers! And I not George Dickel have approved this message!!!!

Thanks
But Dawg everyone knows the 103 is a great motor.
I see you list a Duracell on your profile.
How many miles did YOU put on it?
Under the Dawgs fine care did you experience cylinder issues with it?
Just trying to figure out where your coming from on this 110 issue,,,,,,,personal experience or internet discussion!
We all know the internet is the absolute truth!
