96" Andrews 54 cam install. The Dyno Speaks!
« on: April 08, 2009, 12:22:19 PM »

The surprising results of a simple bolt in Andrews 54 cam in our 09 96" shop Bagger. The before dyno run is a completely stock engine with a 2 into 1 exhaust and a SE Heavy breather AC. Andrews 54 cam was installed with stock pushrods. 3 hours labor and a full 3 hours in the dyno room to get it perfect. I was shocked to see a full 10 HP gain with only a 4 FT torque increase. Expected to see more torque increase and less HP. Excellent results with no compromise anywhere in the powerband. Next on the list, 107" big bore with a little head work.

Real nice for a 96" bike with only a cam and some pipes.

Steve,

Any chance the "blip" at about 16-1800 rpms could be from throttle lag of the Fly-By-Wire? I know my 08 has a lot!!

Actually it was a rich spot right at the wack of the throttle. I have the throttle blade maxed. It still may lag a little? A little more tuning could eliminate it, but for what? Nobody wacks the throttle wide open at 1500 rpm in 4th gear. Sharp eye Howie.

Steve - I was ready to put the 37 in my '08 96", but your 54 chart looks pretty good!  Do you think the 54 would still work when I get the funds to do a 103" upgrade?

Looking where the power comes in, it seems as though the "butt dyno" will be more impressive.

The 54 wiil be a good choice for a 103 with compression in the 9.8-10.0 range. I plan on going 107 with a dished piston to get about 9.5 compression. The 54 really isn't the best choice for a stock 96 incher. The small torque gain on the dyno chart shows that. The 37 is a better choice for a 96 with stock heads. But If your plans include head work and a 103 kit, I think the 54 is going in the right direction for well manered touring build.

Thanks Steve -

When I have the opportunity to do the 103, I'll do the heads at the same time.  I am sending the stock mufflers to you to do your "thing" on them shortly, and I already have a Ness Big Sucker.  I was hoping to find a cam that will "work" with the 96" now, and do a better job with the 103" and a little head work a little later.  Oh yeah, I'll also do the TTS somewhere in this mix.  It's all about the torque!

Thanks again -
