Oil Temps
« on: April 11, 2009, 09:33:42 PM »

I have an 05  :cherry: SEEG that the oil temp gauge says runs upwards of 220 degrees all the time. Went for about a 50 mile ride today, 54 degrees out and when I got home the temp gauge said 228. Only mods are SE II air cleaner, V&H tru duals with Rineharts and an SERT.

Bike has always run hotter than I think it should, especially considering it has the oil cooler. Asked the Stealership guys and they said anything under 290 was OK......

Anyone else run this hot? Is this normal?????

220 is normal, on a hot day (80 +) it will run up to about 240 or more. An oil temp of 290 would be scary and NOT normal. Is this with the Dipstick temp guage or the fairing temp guage?

The official normal operating oil temperature for a CVO103 is 230°F.  If you do a lot of low speed (parade duty) riding or sitting idling in traffic, you can expect that oil temp to increase dramatically.  Use a good synthetic oil, use common sense about running the engine for extended periods with no or low air flow, and don't sweat the temps.

BTW, you want the oil temperature above 200° to boil off moisture that collects from the combustion process.  Running too cool is just as big a problem as running too hot.

thats normal.
if it reaches 280 and you have dino oil, its trashed, or even syn3, change it.
Full Synthetics can handle much higher temps.
Just cruise sturgis downtown and you'll push the limits on oil temps

I see a lot of emphasis put on the exact number of degrees here.

I think it is more important to know what is NORMAL for your bike.

Different gauges - sending units - location of the sending unit etc are all going to read different - could read different between the same units.

The oil pan seems to be the most common place to add the sending unit but if you look at my thread for the Baker Plus 1 oil pan you will see where that oil is actually coming from. It may not be the area where the oil is at it''s highest temperature.
I don't know what the actual volume of oil is that actually travels through that port in the pan, but it may actually be getting cooled a bit more before it reaches the sending unit, especially with the Baker Pan.

Actually, the highest temp might be the upper returns hose coming out of the engine and back into the pan. But who would a sending unit there?

220F is normal on my SEEG but I saw it much higher this weekend, stuck in LA rush hour traffic.  You'll do your motor better switching to fully synthetic oil.

Came with synthetic originally and I'm still running HD synthetic.

I understand gauge and sensor differences yeild varying read outs, but just wondered what others were seeing. Was thinking about changing oil coolers, or adding the Baker +1, but may just quit worring about based on the feedback.

Appreciate all the comments....... :)

I'm not too sure about "HD synthetic" being full synthetic.  There's much better stuff available than SYN III like AMSOIL MCV.

Syn3 is not fully synthetic, it's a blend. still has capacity to burn= loose viscosity
H-D made a nice try but that's all it was, a try.
Doesn't matter where you check the temp in the oil, it's only going to vary a couple degrees
The worry here is if the engine is running hot, you want to know it to correct it. if your bike RUNS HOT, there is a reason. if it is consistently over 230 then there is an issue

I changed my 03 SERK over to the Hybrid cam plate and newer oil pump used in the 06+ dyna.  My oil temp was in the usually around 233 riding highway speed with 2 up.  Now it is 206 on a cool day, 219 on a hot day.  I don't think an oil temp in the 230's is anything to worry about.  Watch it if you get caught in traffic at an event, it will go up to the 260's or higher.  I use synthetic oil (amsoil and assume all is good.  My cam chain tensioners would have went much farther at 30K miles when I changed over.

It didn't........it came with synthetic "blend".  It's blended with fossil oil.....not a full synthetic.  Try Amsoil or Mobil 1 V-Twin for full synthetic.
